Once you get the card installed in the slot, fire up Apple System profiler and see whether it is recognized, and what it shows for information.

If it is not a common part like Realtek 8139 or 8169, you will need their driver. After you download the driver, it seems to unpack into a folder named "Driver". There is a Mac OS X folder inside, which includes a ReadMe and the software.

What Mac are you installing this into? The Mirrored Drive Doors G4 HAS Gigabit Ethernet.

When you are making the leap to Gigabit Ethernet from slower speeds, your cables will be used in a different way. Speeds up to 100Base-T use only two pairs of wires in the cables. Gigabit uses all four pairs, and your cables may not have been tested that way.

Although the nominal speed is very fast, using four pairs of wires and applying a modulation technique to allow multiple bits per signaling interval allows the base speed to remain below the limits of Category 5e cabling, about 250 MHz.

You will probably not see much of a speed-up in dealing with the Internet -- your Internet connection is almost always the limiting factor. But computer-to-computer file transfers will be much faster, at "near Hard Drive" speeds.
