For those who bought the matte screen option, are you happy with it?

Hello,

I'm planning on getting a new Macbook Pro 15" and wanted to know if those who have the matte screen option are happy with it? Cosmetically does it look bad?

Wondering whether to get the matte option or just buy one with the glossy screen and then buy an anti glare cover to go over it? The laptop I'm used to is my sister's older Powerbook which is matte but lately I'm always on her white Macbook which is glossy. I know when I've used it outdoors it's a pain and if I watch TV shows on it I have to adjust the screen to see it just right.

So I thought I'd get others opinions. I don't have to have matte for work or anything but it's just my preference glare wise.

thebaaron,

Thanks, I have to buy a new iMac as well and will have to just deal with the glossy screen. I currently own a older iMac that is matte that I love but had a flood last May and it hasn't been working as well as it should so insurance is covering the laptop and desktop. I'll have to just deal with the glossy on the iMac and hope they come out with a matte version eventually then I'll trade my glossy one in.

I have an older original MBP with a matte screen, and I love it. No way would I ever want a glossy display. Like thebaaron, I would buy an iMac if it came with a matte display. At least with an iMac you can set it up in a location with minimal reflections. With a portable, reflections are much harder to control.

Maybe we all need to send feedback to Apple!

Good luck!

I have just bought a new 17" MBP today and I have been having the same thought about the screen finishes. In the end I opted for the matte. I'm really happy with it. It produces excellent color reproduction on my photos and can view from almost any angle in any light. It takes the hasle out of having to adjust the screen to aviod reflections

I'd highly reccomend the matte option.

If you are used to the matte as I was, you will be very disappointed in the glossy screen. My wife bought a MBP with glossy screen, and that's the main reason I just bought one with a matte display. The colors are great, and I don't have to look at the windows or light or whatever behind me. Way better.

Her 13" glossy screen has black around it. My 15" matte screen has silver.

I also have a 15" MPB (earlier model) with a Matte screen, which is both excellent in terms of comfort of use and for processing images. However, this screen, like that of the previous poster, is at a lower resolution (1440 x 900) than the current optional offering in HD. The current HD matte display option may prove problematic in terms of system and program UI, as fonts may be difficult to read due to small size. This is, to my mind, regrettable, as this MBP upgrade appears otherwise excellent for those requiring greater processing power.

I have a pair of 17" MBP's, the one from last year in glossy, and the new one (i7 2010 model) in matte. The main reason I got the matte is because that was the only 17" i7's that were in stock at the Apple Store...I've never had a very strong opinion gloss vs. matte.

After close to a week, my eyes are liking the matte screen better. I also think the overall quality of the display is better...maybe my new one has a higher-quality panel than what my 2009 MBP has. Neither of them look "bad", but the I definitely enjoy looking at the images on the matte screen more. Also losing most of the reflections from the keyboard lighting is very nice in certain situations.

I believe the matte screen makes the lid overall slightly less rigid. People who do careless stuff like opening/adjusting the lid by grabbing it from near one of the corners might find it easier to damage the matte screen that way.

Wow, thank you all for your great feedback. On Friday night I went to a local store that carries Macs and ordered the 15" Macbook Pro i7 with the high resolution matte option for $158.00(I'm in Canada) extra and also an i7 27" iMac and I can't wait until they arrive. I was told it will take about 2 weeks also I saw a video on you tube with someone showing off their high resolution anti glare screen and it looks great.

I currently have a 17" iMac that is matte and know the new 27" glossy will be an adjustment but it will be in the basement away from the window so that should help. Currently I use my sister's 13" Macbook glossy a lot and the glossy screen gets to me. Right now I'm on an old Macbook G4 with a matte screen which I love. The keyboard on this old model is one of the best in my opinion as it's so smooth.
