Same problem here... ever since I let Snow Leopard update itself to 10.6.3. Anytime I use a projector and go to fullscreen mode (Keynote, DVD, VLC player. Main display becomes completely corrupted, not to mention after disconnecting from the projector my power saving options no longer work until I restart. I am going to call Apple this weekend; whatever I find out I will post. BTW, I have a Santa Rosa Macbook 2.0. First major problem EVER.

Okay, updates from last page (after fifth Apple Store visit):

(Again) doing an erase-and-install seems to have resolved the issue (at least temporarily). I re-installed OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard; but after doing so, I did all the software updates manually, and chose not to update to 10.6.3.

So, avoid 10.6.3 and you should be good... or at least good enough.

Bingo! My problem exactly. I also have a mid 2008 white Macbook with 2.4 Ghz processor. Anytime that I plug the laptop into a monitor via the mini-DVD to VGA connector, I get the scrambled computer screen and can't see anything.

Difficult if I'm set up to face the audience and the screen is projected behind me.

Have an important slideshow on Monday, so I can't risk trying to downgrade now. Will have to either wait until after Monday or just wait out the 10.6.4 update and HOPE that it addresses the issue.

It seems like the 10.6.4 release will come "soon" (in a month or so, hopefully?), and "According to reports, the current build focuses on *_Graphics Drivers_*, SMB, Time Machine backups, USB, and VoiceOver. The build does not include any further updates or enhancements."

I hope the wait is worth it, I don't really feel like downgrading either.

You can bypass the problem in Powerpoint by going to Presenter Tools in the View menu. To bypass the same issue in Quicktime, you have to maximize the window by dragging a corner. It you try to go full screen by the more traditional methods, you get that washout on your screen. I'm hoping Apple will fix this problem soon because I do a lot of presentations and this hasn't been fun working around their issue.

I'm using 10.6.3 and I just encountered (and solved) the problem I was having.

I had the same symptoms, i.e. connected the machine to my home TV and the screen on my machine became scrambled. I'm pretty new to MacOS, so I'm not sure if these steps will fix everyone's particular problems. They solved mine though:

1. Connected the Mac to the projector. Waited for my screen to become scrambled.

2. Went to 'System preferences -> Displays'

3. Clicked on 'Arrangement' and disabled 'Mirror Displays'

4. Set the resolutions of the two screens separately, TV to 1024x768,60Hz and the Mac to 1152x720.

5. Re-enabled 'Mirror Displays'

Then it worked for me.
