Sony Blu-Ray BDP-S570 wireless cannot connect to Internet via AirPort
I just got a new AirPort Extreme 802.11n and a Sony Blu-Ray DVD player model BDP-S570. The AirPort is set up as a bridge. The DVD player is able to connect to the AirPort, but says it cannot connect to the Internet (although my MacBook can, which I'm using to post this). When I try to configure it automatically, it just fails. When I try manually, it asks for primary and secondary DNS, which the AirPort Utility does not report (maybe it's not applicable when used as a bridge) and the Blu-Ray won't accept manual settings without that. Should these two work together?
Everyone, the firmware on the Sony player is buggy and incorrectly detects an Internet connection. I just received my update disc and updated to version 473 of the firmware. The player still claims I have no Internet connection is available. YET, I am playing pandora radio on the player right now. I am just using a wifi connection over my airport extreme, and my router is a CentOS 4 Linux box..
I will once again try calling up Sony and see if I can convince their basic tech staff that their firmware is buggy and needs to be fixed.
My Sony Bravia LCD TV is finicky, too, and acts a lot like the player. The most frustrating thing is the way Sony devices (both my Sony Blu-ray player and TV) connect to the internet, then lose it, even though every other device on my home network continues to access it. I recently found that when I restarted the router, the TV suddenly found the internet again.
Yeah, I guess my post is a tad Time Capsule specific.
More on Step 4.
You need to use whichever tool you used to set up your wireless router, not your Mac OS X System Preferences. This may be a web page that accesses your router's functions, or you may have a specific utility that came with your router.
Once you have accessed your router, there should be a similar section to the one I mentioned for the Apple Utility. Look for the section that allows you to set up the DHCP Address range that your Orange LiveBox router uses to distribute IP addresses to devices that sign on to your network. There should be a place on that page, or elsewhere that allows you to reserve a specific IP Address for a specific device (your Sony player).
Here is where you enter the specific MAC wireless address (e.g. 00:22:31:f2:z9:6p) that you get from your Sony player, and then assign an IP Address to your player which you type in (e.g. 10.0.1.20). Don't forget to hit the Save or Update button when you are done.
I have a configuration panel for my Orange Router that is likely to be where I make the changes but I can't see anywhere to enter a MAC address directly, or set up a reserve IP address. I have been on to Orange and they tell me that they only support dynamic IP addresses - so is this the problem?
Hi Stuart,
Yes, that probably is your problem. I took a look at your screen shots, the only thing I can think of is to attempt to set the, "Configure DMZ on this Computer." Send me the screen shot of that window, and I'll take a look.
MacHappiest always
I suggest manually setting an IP address on your Sony player, higher than the usual range of addresses that is usually given out. Then enter that IP address into the DMZ entry and click "Configure DMZ on this Computer." Then try to connect from your Sony player. That's all I can think of trying for your situation.
Good luck.
Hey there- I have been having the exact same wireless issues- tried manually connecting, even used ethernet cable to update the firmware, etc. When I called SONY...after the two day run around...I got someone who told me to try an all numeric password for my AirPort (I had numbers and letters and am using WEP). I changed the password to all numeric, hard-booted the modem, turned the blu-ray back on and ran auto configure. Presto. I know very little about all this, so maybe this is obvious, but I thought I'd post if that helps anyone else avoid my headaches.
Thank you MacHappiest for your final suggestion, and thanks to Caloring for yours. Sadly, it seems my Orange wireless router isn't compatible with the networking aspects of the Sony Blu-ray wifi. I can access the Internet but not my iMac.
Having looked at the relative pricing of Time Capsule to a large-enough (32GB) USB Flash drive, I'll go with the latter and make do with adding content via the front slot. It's not too much of a chore but I've got to the point where I have to come to terms with the limitations here!
I have been having a similar problem. My BDP-S570 will connect but lose its internet connection whenever I turn my Macbook on. I am using a Dlink DI-524 router. It is hard wired to my Mac Pro, and then I connect a Macbook, Tivo, Wii and the Sony over wifi. It seems as though I can connect one unit over wifi just fine, but once the Macbook is turned on the Sony can't connect. If I am connected to the internet on my Macbook and then turn on the Wii, I will lose internet on the Macbook. When the Macbook loses the internet connection, the Airport menu shows that it is still connected to my router. Any ideas?
