I am having the same problem on the iPhone 4. I noticed this right after updating to the 4.2.1 OS. It seems to be automatically turning on "Voice Control" at random times and then dialing whatever it thinks you said. This is happening when I have the phone in my coat pocket or just laying on the table nearby.

My iphone 4 started doing that last night, it rang 4 people, and I didnt even it hear it ring them on my blue tooth I was in the middle of a dinner with friends and it was very embarrassing when 2 of the people rang me back the next day and told me bits of the conversation. The people are in my contacts but not favourites. This also happended to a friend who accidently rang me at 1am. This is not fun I cant trust the phone anymore

The problem is the home button for some reason decided to jam on activating voice control any random noise can cause it to think your asking it to dial a contact. Mine has been doing this for a few days it's embarracing hope apple sort this out

My iphone 4 just called my wife by itself while it was on the iHome. It did that quite a few times before. I had the same problem with my old iphone 3GS. So it must be a software issue. One most serious instant involving my iphone calling one of my prospective employers (I was on the short list for final decision) a few times late at night by itself while it was on my holster. I only caught it when I looked at the phone by chance. I was horrified that the call was on for a few minutes and I heard the annoyed prospective employer hollering on the other end. He never called me back despite my futile attempt to try to explain. Why Apple is not doing something to prevent this despite the numerous complaints simply escapes me! Any patch or fixes will be much appreciated - the Apple "genius" solution of deleting all my apps is not a viable solution!

since upgrading to an iphone 4, i've also experienced that the iphone makes random calls on its own, to numbers in the phonebook or that are in the call history. it made a call to a friend in poland two days ago in the middle of the night. why hasn't apple posted a fix or any information, and instead requires an apple care subscription to assist? there may be a blackberry in my future.

Paulrigby may have something there in regards to the Voice Activation feature as a possible suspect. My wife's 4 makes random calls, but my 3Gs has not. Has anyone had success with turning off the Voice Activation? I'll try that on my wife's 4 when she comes home.

i have replaced my iphone4 3 times for dropped calls, tommorow replacing it for the 4th time for the dropped calls and randam calls.

everytime i told apple that its hardware problem but they kept sating its network problem. i sometimes did belive that it might be. but now random calls cannot be a network issue. dont know whta other problems we are going to face in furutre?

I have resolved this issue many times by saving up data and restoring as a new device. This problem can also be caused by a defective SIM card and if restore does not fix then SIM needs to be replaced.

I was waiting for a tube yesterday when my iphone4 decided to play me a song from my itunes. When I looked at the phone it had dialled a random number. Half an hour later it decided to play me another song - could have been very embarrassing as I was just about to go to a meeting. I turned if off completely. When turned on again it began to make random calls again. It won't restore on itunes and just hangs so it looks like a trip to the shop. Daren't have it switched on at night in case it wakes friends up.  Can't believe that there hasn't been a fix for this yet.

My iPhone 4 with the latest iOS 4.3.3 just started doing this yesterday. The Iphone was in my pocket and It just made a call on its own. This is very disturbing since it was very late at night. I hope Apple can address this issue and offer a solution. This used to happen with earlier version of the OS.  It has been going on for a long time when is it going to be fixed?  I tend to keep the phone switched off when I am not needing it which is hardly a solution!!!

I have an iPhone 3 and it started doing this today.  I was literally sitting there watching my phone press random buttons on its own!!  It would select the phone from the home page and then it would call anyone on my favourites list.  I would end the call and it would call them again and again.  Then it would select edit in the corner of the screen and almost delete some contacts.  If I tried to use the phone, it would exit the screen I was using and go back to the main screen.  Also, for some reason now the "a" on the keyboard does not work.  My phone has not been dropped or water logged.  Very creepy!  Like there is a ghost in my phone!  I am going to try a restore.  Otherwise my phone is completely useless!

My wife and I still have the first generation iPhones and two days ago they called each other at the same time. I thought my wife butt-dialed me and I thought it was funny. But she was sitting on the couch and her phone was all the way across the room. We are visiting my mom right now and her phone just called my phone again. Her phone is at our house.

    It's kind of creepy.

Angela I wish I could talk to you.... my phone is similar and it has nothing to do with the model, the service, or who is in your contacts or who yu called last. (There are some technical problems with last calls being repeated, buttons too senstive- those are purely technical). But the other strange events- one can find references on the web - that happened to others, esp. more often in Feb 2006, summer 2008, Dec 2008, and now this past summer, these are something else entirely. Please be open and ask.

I haven't had this happen on my iPhone (touch wood) but I have seen an iPad do similar crazy things such as Angela (3 up) and UpInTheHills (above).

    1) Make sure bluetooth is off if you don't need it, and

    2) Keep it away from stray electrical charges.

The iPad in question, when it was near a particular type of monitor, the keys on the keyboard would just start typing for no apparent reason. Move it away from the electrical interference, and it was fine. Another iPad, same model in the same location had no issues.

my iPhone4 is doing this. The difference with mine, is that it is calling numbers not in my address book, nor have I ever called them. completely strange #'s. It called one of the numbers twice in 2 weeks for a business that makes water pumps for large commercial applications. I guess maybe I really need that fire engine grade water pump to water everyone's lawn!
