iPad starts playing music in my bag!

i put my ipad in my bag and then after walking a bit, it starts playing music by itself. so obviously some jostling caused some combination of button hits on the ipad's outer controls caused music to autoplay.

can anyone tell me which buttons play music without opening up ipod in the ipad itself? sort of like me hitting the button on my iphone headset, when there is no active call, will start playing music on my iphone.

thx

iPad, iPhone OS 3.1.3

My iPad just started with the same problem today--- and I say problem, because it ran my battery all the way down to 22% today (usually it's at about 70% when I get home)..... not to mention it doesn't sound too professional when 50 Cent is spurting profanity out of your briefcase (though it's pretty funny)

I put the screen lock on several times today and it kept starting to play music-- I then put the iPad on mute, but every time I took it out of my bag today, the screen had been somehow turned on.

I've reset the device about four times today-- it's acting strange and this is the first day I've had any problems with it.

Until it is fixed (or not), why not simply 'Shut-Down' your iPad when carrying it around. It is simple to do (just hold the side button down until you get the shut-down slider on the screen and slide it).

When you are ready to turn it on, simply hold the side button down for 3 seconds and it will boot up your iPad. It is good to do this occassionally (go ahead, do a search, the links will come up that it is good for performance).

When shut-down, you don't have to worry about the screen being touched accidentally, wearing down the battery even if you have the lock on (it still may turn your screen on). When shut-down, it is 'off'. It only takes about 5-10 seconds to boot back up.

Hope this is helpful 🙂

It just happened to me and that is how I found this discussion on the topic...

Mine was in an opened folio case on my desk whith the charger plugged in but a 100% charge. It was "off" (te stand-by mode when you turn the screen off with the top button) and I do use a lock combination.

I was doing something with my iPhone at the moment when it started playing ABC's Zillionaire (irrelevant but entertaining fact). I checked the bluetooth keyboard and it appeared to be off so I turned it On and stop the playback. By the way, when it started playing, just like when activated through the bluetooth keyboard, the screen does come on and asks for the pin number to unlock it.

Blutooth devices arround me include two Apple wireless keyboards (including the old one that does not pair with the iPad and the latest model which is paired to it), a MacbookPro and a D-Link adapter connected to a PowerMac keyboard (not paired to the Pad).

In addition, the keyboard was in a bag but nothing appeared to be pressing the any of the buttons as the netbook bag only had the keyboard.

(That's my story... hope we figure this one out. My iPad is now playing Metallica's Human... the stragest follow up after Zillionare.. no wait, now it's hungry like a wolf.)

Off-topic, sort of related ' cause of the bluetooth issue, can the iPhone 4 be paired with an iPad?

Well.. I also started experiencing this recently but in my case I was able to verify that the bluetooth keyboard was the cause... Basically, any key on the keyboard "activates" the iPad (as if you clicked the home key and slide to unlock).. and from that point on well. if you press the play button on the keyboard then it starts playing either music or video depending on what you did last.

To me it seems like a problem that needs to be fixed.

I have a wireless keyboard as well and turned it off, I.e. Bluetooth functionality completely turned off, and yet music just starts playing randomly. Really need help with this. It's ok to turn it all the way off but why do I have to. Someone said a double tap when locked will start the iPod? That's silly. It's not an iPod. Its primary function is not music. It's frustrating.

This is happening to me as well when my iPad is in my bag. Very embarrassing to be at a meeting and have music randomly start playing (it was Rihanna this morning).... Has this been figured out yet? I noticed most posts are older. I have a wireless keyboard. I thought that if I turned the keyboard off it would stop but today keyboard was off but music still played. I do use a lock combination. Help!

I had the same problem...THE solution is ridiculously simple. After doing some research on how to turn the iPod app, I realized (due to the threads that popped up) that when I was powering down my iPad (or so I thought) I was actually only putting it into a semi-sleep mode. This mode allows you to continue to received audio push notifications for email and other messages. IN ORDER TO FULLY PUT YOUR IPAD TO SLEEP, PUSH AND HOLD THE POWER BUTTON FOR A FEW SECONDS. When you turn it back on, you'll notice that the music player on the iPod app is off, not just on pause.

Hope that helps.

It's called the Sleep/Wake button, and pressing it momentarily will lock, or sleep, the iPad. There's no need to hold for several seconds and, in fact, doing so will present the red PowerOff slider. If you slide it, you shut down the iPad; if you cancel instead, you stay locked.

If the iPod is playing, sleep or locking won't stop it; it just keeps playing, and continues to play when you wake up the iPad again. If it had been paused, it comes back still paused on that same track. There really is no "off" state for iPod, no Stop button, etc.
