My iTunes Mobile Applications folder is full of old versions

Hi there, my iTunes Mobile Applications folder (~/Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications) is full of old redundant versions of iphone apps, when will they get deleted?

2008 Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

And only reason it does this is because the iTunes application is not working correctly.

"Since Apple decided to store older versions along with the newer version of an app in your folder, "

They didn't decide to do this.
