Resize by inches?

I have an old website that requires images to be a certain horizontal dimension.
They also have to be 72 Dpi.
The 'full size' Horizontal needs to be 6.0 inches wide the 'thumbnail' needs to be 2.5 inches wide.
The 'full size' Vertical needs to be 4.5 inches wide and the 'thumbnail' needs to be 2.0 inches wide.

The very old version of iphoto we used to use allowed us to resize based on inches and to set the dpi. How do I accomplish this in the current version?
Thanks in advance.

That would work if I knew either of those two numbers. 🙂
I receive photos from various sources of unknown resolutions and sizes.
Example:
I receive an image. unknown dpi, unknown dimension. I need to convert it to 72 dpi and in this example to a width of 6.0 inches. Can I convert to the lower resolution in iPhoto? Without distorting the image. How do I crop it to a set dimension?
Or is there an inexpensive program that will do this with out all the complicated manipulations? This seems way to complicated for what I could do in the older version with two mouse clicks.
Thanks
And sorry if my frustration comes through.

*A digital image does not have DPI*

*It has ONLY pixels (dots)*

It has NO INCHES

You want it to be 6 inches at 72 DPI according to your statement

SO 6 inches at 72 dpi needs 6*72 = 432 pixels (dots)

6" x 4.5" at 72 dpi = 6*72 x 4.5*72 = 432 pixels x 324 pixels

So you crop to 6 x 4.5 and export with the maximum dimension at 432 pixels

I am not aware of an expensive program to do this - google is your friend - I believe that PhotoShop Elements may do it

But on the other hand multiplying 6 times 72 does not seem so difficult to me

Not so. All you need to do is select the photo in iPhoto and go to the Info window in the lower left hand corner of the window (click on the blue "i" button if it's not showing) and you can see the pixel dimensions of the photo. That's all you need to know. Then do the math as Larry pointed out.

Select the image you want for 6 inches (432 pixels) and us the File->Export->File Export menu option. In the final export window select Kind=Jpeg, JPEG Quality="whatever works for you"; Size=Custom. In the Custom window set the maximum dimension to be 432 pixels (or you can set the width to 432 whichever works for you). The resulting exported image will be 432 pixels wide.

Do the same for the smaller image (2.5 x 72= 180 pixels). It's really that simple. No need to use any 3rd party application.
