VGA Adapter says: "This accessory is not supported by ipad."

So, I have this brand new iPad, with this new brand new VGA Adapter [1], but, doesnt matter which program I try to use it and on which monitor, tv, projector, etc, I plug it, it gives me the "This accessory is not supported by ipad." message.

The message only appear when the cable would be really used, so I need to open an youtube video on the youtube app to see the message. On some monitors (like a Dell 17" LCD Monitor) it just dont show any image, nor the message. On an older CRT monitor it shows the not supported message and no image, on an Dell projector it shows the message too and no image again, on a panasonic bravia LCD tv it doesnt show either the message or the image on the tv screen.

I'm kind of confused. Any ideas?

Hi Sandro:

I have a new 3rd generation iPad and I am having difficulties connecting the VGA cable to a projector at work.

It doesn't seem to be receiving any signal from the iPad whatsoever, despite rechecking the connection.

Do I need to reconfigure the iPad settings for VGA output?

I thought you were supposed to just plug the cable into the iPad, hook it up to the projector, and go? :(

Frustrated,

Mark

I suggest you take it back to the shop ASAP.

I had an Ipad2 on which the HDMI output did not work and they swapped it for another one.

The HDMI output never did work properly however even after that, and I have given up on it.

I don't know about the Ipad3 but on the Ipad2 there is no config for whether the output should come out or not. The video output should simply mirror what is on the screen, with some modifications according to the app which is running.

Hi Peter:

I did return my non-functional cable to the Future Shop store where I bought it and got a full refund.

However, I wanted to go to the Apple Store here in Ottawa to see if they could fix me up with a working version of the adapter.

I was kind of hoping they would have a TV or projector or something actually at the store I could test it out on my iPad and/or iPhone to confirm that it worked, seeing as I already have dealt with the frustration of it not working properly once before.

They didn't have that option, though they did have a cable that, for all intents and purposes looked EXACTLY like the one I bought before that DIDN'T work.

And that was strange, because the reviews in the Apple Store app on my iPhone seemed to suggest that some of the adapters worked, and some didn't.

Finally, on Amazon, I noticed something odd. There are TWO almost IDENTICAL copies of this VGA adapter part in the accessories section.

One is labeled MC552ZM/A, and another is labeled MC552ZM/B.

The newer /B part appears to have BETTER reviews overall than what I assume is the OLDER /A part.

The trick will be to see if Apple can determine for sure whether or not the ones they have in stock at the store is in fact the later (presumably working) /B part.

Hope this helps! 😝

VGA Adapter says: "This accessory is not supported by ipad."

After upgrading the IOS to 8.1.3. I now can not hook up to my projector. We have tried multiple iPads and iPhones. Unfortunately all have already had the iOS updated. And yes, the adapter worked fine before the updates. Is Apple aware of this? I can not ask them without purchasing the $30 one time support.

There were some iPhone fires caused by off-brand cables and Apple was blamed. IOS-8 ensures that only approved cables will be used. However, it appears that it has been incorrectly identifying true Apple cables as non-approved!

If your cable is not Apple, your only option is to replace it with an Apple cable. If you do have an Apple cable, you need to contact Apple support - 800-275-2273 in the U.S.A. and I think Canada. If an Apple Store is convenient for you, a visit there is probably a better solution (there is no charge)
