(1) The scheme using the count of characters was embedded in the script before your proposal based upon column width.
(2) There is no link between a column's width and the number of characters embedded.
For a given width, the number of chars depends of the font, the style, the char size.
This is why I will not retain this scheme.
If you dislike the use of the header row to calculate the number of chars (remember that in my example, I used formulas) I may write a piece of code counting the number of chars in every cells of each column to get the greater one BUT the OP's example prove that it's not a good soluce because its cell A4 expands above cells B4, C4.
I will try to use a more complicated scheme :
extract the list of cont of chars used in a column
try to drop 'special cases' like the named cell A4
and use the 'more meaningful' count.
