I use an intel-based iMac purchased in '06 and run OS 10.5.8. I contacted Netflix because I am unable to stream movies from their site. Their tech(?) had me go to useragentstring.com where it shows that the browser (both Firefox and Safari) are running on a PowerPC CPU. How can this be? How can I change it?
Hey, Lyssa, you're on to something. As you suggested. . .
a) I downloaded Firefox and opened it from the dmg. Voila! It shows up running as Intel. Now what? I've selected 'keep in dock' for now, but how do I make this permanent?
b) I downloaded Safari, but there is no way to open it from the download file. The only option (as far as I can determine) is to install it on the hard drive.
Okay, so something has gone astray when installing the applications. It's been quite some time since I installed Safari, so I'd forgotten it works a bit differently!
You don't
have to put Firefox into the Applications folder; that's the general recommendation since many applications only work well when installed in the Applications folder.
In the new account, download Firefox. Drag the Firefox icon out of the disk image and into the account's documents folder, or to the desktop, then launch Firefox from its new location. Does it list PowerPC or Intel?

Lyssa~
Are you saying I should sign in as a new user on my iMac before I install Firefox?
Yes, you should sign into a new account on your iMac, download a copy of Firefox, then install this copy of Firefox in the new account's home folder (the one with the house icon).
SUCCESS! FireFox and Safari are both now running as Intel on my iMac. It MAY have been the suggestion from someone in my Mac Users group to uninstall Silverlight. He said I was running an earlier version and needed to upgrade. I haven't done that yet, but just maybe the uninstalling worked.
THANK YOU all so much for your help and your tips. It is so nice to have such an active group of Mac-o-philes out there.
