iPad Power Button No Longer Working

Hi all- I got my iPad (32Gb) on launch day and it has been a wonderful piece of tech to use- until today, when the iPad's power button simply stopped working. The iPad is still in mint condition, kept in a case, and handled like a gem- but pressing the black power button in the top right corner does not turn on/off the screen... it's as if the power button doesn't connect to circuitry at all. All the other buttons (home button, vol. rocker, screen lock) still work just fine.

Since the power button worked before, I wondered if it was a software problem and did a full system backup and restore- but, alas, even after the restore the power button simply doesn't do anything.

Has anyone else seen experienced this problem? I checked other online forums and it seems at least a handful of other users have also experienced this too- what to do? The nearest Apple store is a couple hours away, which is why I ordered the iPad to be shipped to me on launch day.

I appreciate any advice you may offer- thanks!

I just had this issue a few minutes ago except my Ipad air was not working on both power button and home button so I had no way on swit on my iPad but I thought on how the iPad screen switches on if you plug it in I used hey Siri I told Siri to off my iPad but Siri can't do that sadly Apple better add that in. But for some reason I wanted to press both my power and home button hard although it wasn't working until i saw the apple symbol when the iPad restarts. It worked after that restart. SO JUST PRESS BOTH POWER AND HOME BUTTON IT MIGHT WORK.

EDIT: My power button was also not working.

As crazy as this sounds, I've found a "real" fix for this issue, or at least the way it was happening on my wife's iPad 2. Knowing the other way to sleep the display was to use a Smart Cover, I borrowed the Smart Cover for my iPad (she uses a Targus case without the magnet) and placed it over her display. Of course, the display went to sleep. I removed the Smart Cover and it woke back up. I then pressed the top button and it had resumed normal operation. No issues since.

My guess is that whatever mechanism reacts to the magnet got hung up somehow and putting the Smart Cover magnet back over it got things sorted again. If you don't have a Smart Cover around or feel like going to the store to use one there, I'd guess just using a normal magnet should do the trick. Hope this helps others!

Here is how I fixed it...read on.

My button stopped working. After a little research, I found this solution.

Settings > General > Accessibility > Assistive Touch (turn on)

Touch the new button on the screen.

Choose Device

Press AND HOLD the Lock Screen icon for 10 seconds and the "slide to power off" display shows up! It will shutdown nicely when you slide it.

WAIT...now how do I turn it on?

Plug up the power connector to you computer and your device...up pops the reboot Apple.

...and the crowd goes wild.

I am 69 years old and am surprised so many of the members posting comments like " I bang it with my hand " etc. This is not the way to solve technical issues.

I had the same problem, and opened up the iPad (1) and found the power/volume control button came off the connector. Now the connector which is on the logic board is flimsy and poorly soldered on. Mine came off. It will be a bugger to put this one back. It would be extremely difficult to solder it back. I am still thinking of how to solve this one.

Apple has not a good job of designing or choosing a good connection system.
