iPad Power Button No Longer Working

Hi all- I got my iPad (32Gb) on launch day and it has been a wonderful piece of tech to use- until today, when the iPad's power button simply stopped working. The iPad is still in mint condition, kept in a case, and handled like a gem- but pressing the black power button in the top right corner does not turn on/off the screen... it's as if the power button doesn't connect to circuitry at all. All the other buttons (home button, vol. rocker, screen lock) still work just fine.

Since the power button worked before, I wondered if it was a software problem and did a full system backup and restore- but, alas, even after the restore the power button simply doesn't do anything.

Has anyone else seen experienced this problem? I checked other online forums and it seems at least a handful of other users have also experienced this too- what to do? The nearest Apple store is a couple hours away, which is why I ordered the iPad to be shipped to me on launch day.

I appreciate any advice you may offer- thanks!

I just had this issue a few minutes ago except my Ipad air was not working on both power button and home button so I had no way on swit on my iPad but I thought on how the iPad screen switches on if you plug it in I used hey Siri I told Siri to off my iPad but Siri can't do that sadly Apple better add that in. But for some reason I wanted to press both my power and home button hard although it wasn't working until i saw the apple symbol when the iPad restarts. It worked after that restart. SO JUST PRESS BOTH POWER AND HOME BUTTON IT MIGHT WORK.

EDIT: My power button was also not working.

Hate to reply to my own post but somehow, it's back working again. 😕

I "think" I did the following.

At the home screen, I started the photo frame and that's when it worked. Not sure what triggered it.

This is totally bizarre as I had restored the entire system and it still wasn't working. Maybe something internal is a little "loose" but I doubt there's much that ain't solid state or hard wired in there.

I am absolutely dumbfounded by this. Last one to touch it was me, my son was playing the MX Mayhem, he went swimming and left the iPad on the sofa. I retrieved it, screwed around with it and nothing. Came back to the iMac and was searching the forums. Pressed the home button activated the photoframe (somewhat accidentally) and wham, it just worked.

Strange things are afoot at the circle K. 😁

I have a similar problem. The button feels perfect, crisply presses down and returns fine, but the iPad is unresponsive. It will not engage the lock screen...BUT, when I hold down on the power button for 10 to 15 seconds and then let off it responds by going into shutdown mode. Because it does something when I hold it down, I find it difficult to believe this is strickly a hardware problem. When I reset the device it frequently gets into a loop, apple logo pops up then it resets again after 30 seconds of pause....It takes cycling the iPad a couple times to get it out of the loop. Of course I have tried restoring and such, but to no avail.

So it was the summer since I noticed this problem, right.

Well the volume buttons have now started to show the same behaviour. Now if I tap the back of the ipad at the corner where the buttons are, and I stress tap, not whack, the buttons start working. SImilarly if I press on the front at the buttons with the corner, they stop working.

Hmm, I thought, maybe if I tap around the sleep/wake button, something will happen. But nothing.

I did though, put the ipad down on a hard surface, and while pressing the S/W button, and applying pressure across the opposite corners, I can get the S\W to work. Very strange, like it still functions but somehow in its normal state it does not work.

I opened it up but made a bit of a mess and don't recommend you do it!!. LOL, it still works though.😁

It seems that Apple needs to pick more durable buttons, everything else is top notch.

I have the same issue. IPad works fine, power button does not. THere was a time when it worked. Took it to Genius for service and they told me $499 to fix it. Kind of got blown off by the Apple store near Buffalo, NY. Never took the Protective cover off, just checked the date I bought it. I asked about a way to power it down so I could take it on a plane and the Apple Genius (or not) told me she just uses airplane mode and her flights have not crashed. Amazed at the lack of technical thought, the crash comment and the poor service.

I think it's becoming clear from all the posts that Apple A) doesn't know why this problem exists, B) doesn't have a fix for it, and C) doesn't care anyway.

Sadly, your best bet, fine folks, is to return your iPad for a full refund and wait until Apple gets their act together. After their next release of iPad, check the posts here. If there are no posts about the next version if iPad regarding the power button, then we're all good to go and can go purchase one.

I too just developed the same problem. After reading all the posts I tried tapping the back corner at the switch and it worked. I then tried just shaking the ipad and that worked consistently. Evidently the problem is with the accelerometer. I found that shaking it only worked one time, it had to be shaken each time to use the switch. It also worked to shake it to turn it on with the on off switch, but of course pushing the home button is the easiest way to turn it on.

I have the same problem with my iPad 2, just out of waranty. Stopped working, then started again, stopped again. Took it to Genius Bar in Civent Garden London and they did a full reset which seemed to fix the proble. Next day it stopped working again! Apple's solution if the restore does not work is to replace it for £199, which I think is a bit poor considering it is only just out of waranty.

Tried the tapping and shaking but had no effect.

Anyone else got any ideas, as I cannot really afford to fork out £199 to replace it.
