When my MacBook Pro i7 runs out of battery, it powers off.
I can't seem to figure out why my new macbook pro turns off when it runs out of battery. Typically, when macs run out of battery, they go into sleep mode. However mine skips this completely and just turns off. Any similar problems? any ideas?
I agree Ube, its happened to me once already where my MBP restarted instead of resuming where it had left off!
As for Apple having to update its documents, it wouldnt be the first time!
Hi,
is there anything new on this problem? I am experiencing the same problem on my MacBook Pro i5. After 6 battery cycles I have seen it shutting down once properly. This is really bothering me.
I'm not sure if the problem is exclusive to i5/i7 MBPs. I'm using a late 2007 MPB 2.5GHz core duo 15in. As of the past two weeks I'm getting the same problem ...
- "Shut down" without writing to memory when battery reaches 0%; i.e. no pulsating light and machine is only revived by hitting power button.
- Problem 100% repeatable.
- Plugging in power and hitting power button effects a "double restart": first is silent (like a restore from memory), this is followed by full restart (with chime) a few seconds later.
- Anecdotally, machine seems to take an unusually long time to restart.
It's an old machine, but I am, however, using a newish (10 weeks old) battery ... my fourth for this machine. Health stands at 92% from 86 cycles.
I have a suspicion the problem started after a recent full calibration exercise. (I let the battery run out and then left it sleeping for a couple of hours before affixing power.) Kneejerk reaction is that the reserve was depleted and somehow hasn't recovered, so it can't sleep at 0%.
Regarding this issue specific to the current new line of MacBook Pro 15" i5/i7 only, I believe that Apple is acknowledging that there is an issue. They have asked for my log data twice and are looking for something specific. They did not tell me what it is but I think they are most likely working on a fix. They did acknowledge that there was an issue but did not give me any details.
I've experienced the same problem, with my MBP 15" i7. So I have to wait for a Software Update to solve the problem, or it's a bigger problem, requiring to change battery?I got my MBP just 2 weeks ago, and it's work great except for that
I spoke with genius bar guys here in Italy and they confirm me that the direct safe sleep when battery is totally drained is normal (from what I understood I think it is normal for all machines with integrated batteries). What is not normal is that the computer fails to create properly formatted memory image. They told me that this could be due to a software, hard disk or battery problem. They checked the battery and all seems ok. So they suggested me to reinstall the system and now all works fine, no more sudden shut down. I also changed - using pmset - hibernatemode to 1, so every time that the computer sleeps it also shuts down. After 10 days and a lot of wakeups from safe sleep all seems to work fine. I don't know what will happen when the battery will no longer be at 100 % of its life.
Hi Marco,
I dont understand what you are saying, in your first paragraph you mention that Apple confirmed to you that the "direct safe sleep when battery is totally drained is normal" but then you go on to state that after you reinstalled the system you do not get any sudden shut downs. By "sudden shut down" do you mean "that the computer fails to create properly formatted memory image"?
Thanks
yes for "sudden shut down" I mean "that the computer fails to create properly formatted memory image" and so when it wakes up it restarts loosing all unsaved work.
the answer is that if your machine goes directly to safe sleep when the battery is totally drained, correctly saves memory content to disk and after plugging in awakes from hibernation without losing any unsaved work it is ok. The guys at genius bar told me that this is the way these new machines work. I have owned other portable macs and this left me perplexed, but they assured that it is normal.
On the contrary, if your computer fails to save memory content to disk at safe sleep time and reboots without using the saved disk image, you could have a problem.
Since my computer sometimes lost the unsaved work, they checked my battery (which was ok) and suggested me to reinstall the system. They also asked me if I had changed the hard drive or upgraded RAM, because - in some cases - if the new hardware is not "Apple certified" it could cause problems during the safe sleep procedure.
I'm having the exact same problem on a 13 inch MacBook Pro mid 2010, and after only 5 charge cycles my battery health is at only 91% according to iStat Pro and Coconut battery.
I would be cautious about what your are being told by the Genius Bar guys because Apple's documentation simply does not support what they are saying to you.
It is normal for contents of memory to be saved to the hard drive (SafeSleep) when the battery is drained to 0%. It is NOT normal that there are no battery reserves left after 0% to maintain the memory contents (pulsating sleep light).
Normal behavior is clearly published on Apple Support Docs regarding battery calibration as well as their own power management system in Mac OS X (type man pmset in your terminal). What we are all experiencing is NOT normal unless Apple decides to update its own documentation to single out this MacBook Pro model.
Trying draining the battery a few more times. I'm sure you will be getting at least one improper shutdown within a few cycles.
I am a bit confused by all this calibrating and stuff.
I've done the calibration process many times and the battery charge is floating up an down.
When I am on battery for around an hour the full capacity index drops from 10400 down to 9400 and the energy management is telling me to service the battery (1 month old laptop and it does that from the second week on).
When I am back on power and the energy management states that the battery is 100% charged again the warning goes away and the full capacity index of the battery is back to around 10400.
Asking me this behavior is absolutely unacceptable for a 4k€ Laptop.
Just for Info: The initial charge is specified with 13000mAh
What bothers me is, that Apple is not officially reacting on all those battery issues and getting support on this seem a bit tuff anyways.
Wow, this boat is getting full. I am also having the issue where my new 17" i7 MBP won't go into sleep when the battery is drained. It just seems to shut down.
I found this out tonight when I calibrated my battery for the first time and was surprised when it just shut down. Other threads have been started on this here and other forums so I'm really unsure what to do next since nothing seems to help the matter. A lot of people are getting new machines and it is still going on. Replacement parts are doing nothing for the most part as well. I really don't want to gen the run around if it isn't going to go anywhere ultimately, I have deadlines to meet and can't really be without my laptop. I'm extremely frustrated to have spent so much money and to have basic functionality like sleeping be messed up.
