iPhone 3G Email Crashes

Currently running iPhone 3G w/OS 3.1.3. I recently updated about three weeks ago. Yesterday my email app recently starting crashing for no reason. I will open the app, select an account, and then when looking for which email to read the app will just close and the phone will return to the home screen. Sometimes I get as far as responding to an email, but the result is the same, it will just close and return to the home screen.

I have an Exchange 2003 Account, Verizon, Gmail and a .mil account. Never had any issues prior to yesterday.

Any ideas would be great.

Exactly the same as the op, this only started for me today as well.

Reboot, restart, nothing worked.

Mine is "pop", have solved it by deleting the account, removing the email on the server online, then putting the email account back on my iphone, so without the offending message, it is working again.

I now have a further problem....when I open up outlook on my PC, it draws down the email from the server, and whereas before the messages were left on my iPhone, they now dissappear, so the only copy I have is on my PC, can anyone tell me how I can leave the messages on the phone now (as it was before!)?

Thanks in advance
Piers

I also use a 3GS, 3.1.3, exchange servers (or an opensource variant) and notifylink to forward messages to the iPhone. I'm the only, or perhaps the first affected in my office, but then few use either the 3GS or 3.1.3. This started happening to me around May 28 or so and as best as I can figure correlated to a one or more badly formed messages in my email. Following this thread, I started deleting malformed or bounced messages. After killing off all of them the problem remained and I noticed that one "ghost" message (a meeting invite) would not be deleted from the phone. It was gone from all client views of my mailbox, but would briefly appear on my phone before disappearing, then crashing email. The final fix came when my IT manager deleted and re-added my account to NotifyLink. Wow, that was a bad one. If simple deletes don't solve it for you, get your IT guys involved. If it's hit you, it will hit others in your organization using iPhones. Not good. Get the details out there so that tests can be run before 4.0 hits. Cheers.

FIXED! Check your e-mail settings for the various accounts you have. In my case the crash was caused by my GMail account. You can figure out what account is causing the problem by trial and error, under settings/mail/ . Turn each account off, then try starting the mail application. Once you've found the culprit, check the SMTP settings for the offending account. In my case, there were some old SMTP servers defined that were no longer used. They must be DELETED, not just disabled. The servers are under settings/mail//Account Info/SMTP . Delete any that are not used. Once this is done, you can re-enable the account and the crash should be fixed.

Mail app on my 3GS crashed when i opened a certain email: it would show the beginning of the email followed by a grey-ish/white chequered area, and after a couple of seconds the Mail app would crash ... while searching for the solution, i found it was that certain email-message, not all and not a certain email-account. After reading the message via a different way, and deleting it, Mail app on the iPhone was ok again. But this appears to be a bug to me: if other email-clients read the specific email without a problem (and why would i need to use another way of reading that email, just so i can delete it), why would mail on the iPhone crash on it?

So this just started happening to me today, too. Out of nowhere. For what it's worth, I used my desktop to remove bounced messages from my Exchange account via Outlook and now everything works fine.

HOWEVER, the bounced messages I removed were not new, so I've no idea why this just started happening.

Anyways, removing bounced messages worked for me.
