MBP 15" i7 wont automatically go to sleep

HI,

there are a few topics that have similar issues, but not exactly, so I'll start another one.

My new MBP core i7 2.66 with 8Gig of ram is unable to automatically go to sleep when on battery or when plugged in. It sleeps when selected from the Apple menu or when the lid is closed.. however when the time limit is reached in the Energy Saver prefs, the display will happily switch off but the machine will not sleep.

I have calibrated the battery, reset the SMC, it is a fresh clean install and I have turned off as many application and back ground apps that I can think of. No love.

Any ideas?

MBP Core i7 2.66 GHz 8GB RAM, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

Goto
Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Delete
com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
com.apple.AutoWake.plist
Reboot

Again set those preferences through "System Preferences"

Reboot again

Open a Terminal windows an type:

pmset -g

what are the results?

I dealt with this exact issue on my early 2008 MBP, and I recently received a top-of-the-line replacement from AppleCare. I have the exact same issue on this new 2010 unibody MBP.

I've spent over 10 hours in total on the phone with AppleCare about this issue, and each time the engineers analyze my system, they come up with a different reason for the cause of the problem.

If adding more software (PleaseSleep) can remedy the problem, why can't System Preferences make the sleep function work? I've been pushing for an OS X update for the issue.

Please suggest an OS update when talking to Apple.

Just wanted to add my voice to this topic. I have a brand new 15" i7, and the very first time that I forgot to close the lid, I came back a few hours later with the battery all the way drained. I thought that was strange, since all my previous laptops would go to sleep under these conditions. Since then, I have done various experiments, including the one that I consider the "litmus test": create brand new user, and boot into Safe Mode as that user. No dice, it just won't go to sleep unless I shut the lid. I have downloaded the PleaseSleep program, and that does seem to do the trick, although I am a bit worried that it may have side effects (anyone know? will it lead to disk corruption or anything like that, if the computer is in the middle of a disk operation at that time?)

I have submitted the bug report in the feedback section of the support area. Hopefully, Apple will fix this issue. This computer cost me over $3000, including Applecare, and I expect better.

I've been keeping an eye on this thread for a while now, as like most of you, I too suffer from the "it won't go to sleep" problem (it being a MBP i5). With me, it seemed clear that the HD (1TB WD) would not spin down thus preventing the system from sleeping. I've tried lots of things suggested here but could not get it working.

Recently, I realised that my iMac(i7) suffers from the same issue. So, I thought, what could be the common denominator? I tried a few things as stated earlier and finally I think I have it nailed. Like many laptop users out there, I have a collection of usb and firewire external drives and some of them are WD drives. I had WD Smartware installed on both the iMac and the MBP as I like to keep at least one drive secure with a password. After removing WD Smartware from both machines, I now have two very sleepy systems. Result. It seems that the WD software was getting confused about external and internal drives and keeping them awake (just my theory).

Anyhow, I hope this helps some others.

Hi guys

Just an update on that. Mine now after some clean up of faulty ongoing processes debugged in console goes to sleep on battery and on Power. Strange and magical. I was treating with this for a month. Just to mention that the "go to sleep" setting are not following exactly. My laptop is been set on 5 min to sleep without power but it takes a bit longer...

Apple should leave the iphone 4 and should look to the professional users a bit...!!!!!!!!

To the previous posters: Are we all talking about the latest MacBook Pro (2010)? This would mean that there are effectively some of them that do go to sleep by themselves.
Mine definitely does not - even if I boot from a freshly installed OS X.

Meanwhile I really start thinking AppleCare is making fun of me. They are telling me (orally) that there was a problem and the engineers were working on it. on the other hand they seem to ignore my requests on the status and now I had to send the diagnostic files for a second time since they were lost the first time ??

I think I found something that make a big difference for this issue.. after many calls to Apple, two vists to the NYC stores and having Apple send me a second computer, I can across the following which I can reproduce..

On the new computer (17" i7 with 512GB SSD), out of the box the computer comes with 10.6.3.. set Energy Saver to 2 mins on battery and voila, computer sleeps..

Then I do a software update and get all Apple updates including 10.6.4.. sleep is now broken..

Anyone else able to confirm this?

I think it is a 10.6.4 issue..

Just my two cents..

MBP 15" i7 wont automatically go to sleep
