How can I stop the annoying pop ups--probably installed by Apple--from showing up instead of my Screen Savers? Today it was an iPhone advertisement. I vaguely remember using an application called TinkerTool in the past and I have updated my version of it. The problem? I don't know how to find the troubling pop ups so I can delete them.
Could use more information here. When are these appearing? No browser open or anything? Something just appears in the middle of the computer screen? Never heard of that before.
Go into Screensavers in Sys Prefs and make sure you haven't checked RSS Screensaver or Random. This is coming from the Apple site. It's normal behavior for RSS --not that it's very pleasant to receive advertising as a screensaver -- if this is checked. Try a different screensaver, or you might also want to think about not using one at all. You can just check Display Sleep to kick in after a few minutes in Energy Saver. Works just as well.
I do have Random Screensaver checked but I don't know exactly what you mean by RSS. I want the Screen Savers that I installed to show, minus the Apple stuff. What are the other options you mention?
There is an RSS Visualizer listed in the Screen Saver window, and it might not be something I installed. Also it might be what I want to delete. How do I know?
Unchecking it doesn't do anything in 10.4.x, it's supposed to hide it from the Dock, it's there to see if you insert a Music CD, but if you want to remove it you highlight it & click the little minus icon.
This is really not so complicated. The RSS Visualizer is part of the System; you don't delete it. It allows RSS feeds to supply your screensaver. RSS feeds are direct feeds or links usually to a particular site, often, but not always, news sites. One of the possible RSS feeds to RSS Visualizer is from Apple. This is where the ads are coming from. _If you have Random checked, it will, among the other screensavers, use RSS Visualilzer. This is why you are getting the ads._
If you don't want the ads, you have several options: Uncheck Random and select a particular screensaver, but not RSS Visualizer. Or, check RSS Visualizer and select a different RSS feed, something other than Apple. (But this may still hook you up to someone else's advertising.)
Or don't use screensavers at all; use display sleep.
I do have random checked. RSS Visualizer does show up in my Screen Saver window.. You say it is 'normal behavior for RSS' but you don't tell me how I can either delete it, or disable it if that is my problem. I want to use only the Screen Savers that I installed.
