new external hard drive - itunes sooo slow

Hi there

I recently moved my itunes library from one external hard drive to another (a Buffalo 500gb lite). It is now taking a few seconds to load each track, with the rainbow timer spinning round, and doing anything like updating the library takes forever.

The new hard drive seems to be okay otherwise, transferring files quickly, and loading music on Serato Scratch Live (a digital dj'ing app) is fine.

Not sure if there is anything I can do - any suggestions??

is the drive formatted for Mac ? does it connect via USB and, if so, have you tried another USB port ?

yes, yes and yes...usb is fine. Maybe that's just how it is, and I need a different hard drive...?

well, consider getting a firewire 800 drive. my iTunes lives on one of these http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=11270. very fast and quiet !

I have a similar problem - just moved a VERY large iTunes library to a Western Digital 2tb HD - connected with USB 2.0 to Mini which is connected via ethernet to Time Capsule for distribution. Have done this in past with DIFFERENT HD with no probs. Now, streaming takes forever - movie doesn't load quickly and stops multiple times within movie to buffer. This was NOT a problem with previous HD. Is it the speed of the HD or the USB connection? Would drive itself work in Drobo environment? Just trying to salvage the purchase of the drive in case my suspicion that it it too slow is correct....
