AT&T 3G -> 0.03Mpbs?

I've been trying to be patient since I thought AT&T might be inundated on Friday with activations, etc., but this is getting out of hand.

I've done speed tests the last three days, on 3G, using both the FCC Apps, as well as the Speedtest.net app, and generally I get less than stellar speeds. Usually around the 0.03Mbps range for downloads, and uploads won't even register a speed. Additionally, when I try to browse the web, or update Twitterific, they usually time out because the speeds are so slow. I paid for an unlimitted plan, and I can confirm that the iPad says 3G, and not E (for Edge).

I'm curious what other people are seeing for 3G speeds. Am I the only one having this problem? Any suggestions for a way to fix this issue?

Well, after three days, I think my situation is getting better. I put in a call to AT&T a few days ago, and they agreed that my speeds were lackluster. I received a call yesterday, and today, letting me know that I should start seeing improvements.

I can happily report that all day today, I've been getting 300K/s when running speed tests, so they must have fixed something.

Hopefully this holds out.

I would encourage anyone having these types of problems to call AT&T and see if they will help. In my case, they did, so maybe you'll have the same luck.

Well I went dial up to try and get AT&Ts phone number and that was slow as heck too, turned the Ipad back on and it went to 60k and now it's at 120k same as yesterday and my dialup is working again so there must have been some sort of system problem I still have 10 days for returning the iPad so I'll see how things go. The really interesting part is that the cell tower here serves an area with 4000 or so people with Edge, go 20 miles down the road and they have 3G in an area that serves about 500 people. I can only hope that means they will expand coverage to up here. You can bet i won't be buying anything more for the iPad until I'm sure thingsnhave stabilized. Now I have to tell my mom she may not be getting that macmini after all...happy mothers day 🙂.

update: I've had several AT& chats, and super professional courtesy follow-up calls. "X number of Towers are down," or "capacity is strained," or ""time of day," is getting old. This morning i'm getting 164 down, 33 up. Slightly better than twice the speed of a 56k modem 20 years ago? This is so disappointing. AT&T is calling back again this a.m. about 11. I'm going to express these observations and tell them either the problem is going to be addressed or I'm returning the product; and if I do return the product it's b/c AT&T's 3G iPad bandwidth is pitiful. Netflix should be marketing as "WiFi only," period.
