Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.
It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.
Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

I have had my Macbook pro for less than a week and had the same issue occur today. I ran the hardware test (short and long test) and no problems where reported with the hardware. Not sure what else to do.

5 hard freezes and 1 Grey Screen of Death. There are 6 kernel panic log in the system console. This is a 15" Hi-rez Anti-glare model. It locked up once after I initially set it up out of the box and decided to erase and install clean.
I have an appointment at the Genius bar tomorrow afternoon. I'll let you know what comes of it.

In contrast, my MBP from last year has never locked up and is running the near exact application set.
I just had the exact same problem. First time since I received the machine last Thursday.

It has happened 3 times in the last 3 weeks that I've had it.
Temperature at the times was normal, last crash tonight the CPU was at 54degreesC (the coolest it ever goes while in use).
I've got my normal set of applications open: iStat Menus, Adium, Firefox, X-Chat, Quicksilver, iTunes, NetNewsWire, Mail.app. None of these have caused issues in the past.

Keyboard and mouse are running via Synergy from another machine.
Also running optical audio out.
Here's a couple things I've noted when it crashes:
* All applications will freeze and the mouse can still move for about 5-10 seconds. Then the mouse will freeze too (it freezes as a pointer arrow, nothing beach balls).
* Most network connections are dropped. I lose my Synergy connection (mouse and keyboard) and iTunes (playing off a network drive) will stop too (it goes silent, not playing the same frame again and again).
* The most peculiar thing though, one time I was chatting to someone with Skype, and the video froze, the mouse froze yet I could still talk to the other person. This indicates that everything else is still running, the network is still able to keep up a stream and even the audio is still going alright.
Hopefully some of this information helps, I'll post if I work out something else.
I am having this issue with my new 13" SSD. I just repaired permissions... will see if that works. Generally this happens if I leave my computer on overnight, and in the morning it will freeze. Hopefully repairing permissions does the trick.
I have been having the same problem. The screen becomes unresponsive and I have to do a physical power off. The machine is not under heavy load at the time. One thing which has been present each time is flash applications in Chrome. But then, parallels has also always been loaded.
What is bizarre is that iTunes will keep playing audio even after the machine flat lines??
I had it happening every day or so, it is extremely annoying. I have moved over to Windows 7 on Bootcamp to see if I see still have any problems. I have had one blue screen so far, but I need more time to see if it is a recurring problem. At least this will give an indication as to whether it is a hardware of software problem.
Will keep everyone posted, these mysterious problems are never the best to troubleshoot.
has anyone tried the Automatic Exchange graphics modes to disabled.? for me it started mainly with graphic problems. eg. start of imovie, itunes, iphoto, photo booth.
I got the very same thing...2 years ago : it ends up by changing my motherboard (very recently) ; it was due to the graphical system becoming too hot and then freezing
I've got this too on a new 17'' i7. Three times in 3 days - hardware test etc. is not showing any issue but the kernel log shows an NVDA graphics channel exception.
I Have had my i7 MacBook pro for one week and can't use it. I find it happens offten to the point where I can't trust it. Short PowerPoint presantions freezes up 300 people in attendence washington DC DOL sad . I had told a tec after a couple of days and he tried to tell me it was my mac office it happens just using mac iPhoto slideshow ? Pretty upset.
@aozoren, Interesting that it comes back after 10-15 minutes... I will try to let it sit that long the next time. I have been packing around my Flip waiting to reproduce the issue and catch it on video.
Along with others, I am not running a lot of apps: maybe even just Mail and Firefox when it happens.
Additionally, the logs in Console do not seem to have anything useful within them that even notes the problem. There are no Kernel Panics logged with only one CrashReporter logged for the adb (Android Debug Bridge) which happened after the last freeze by a day. This machine is very new, so not much has really happened on it.
I am in the process of shipping mine back to Apple for an exchange. Given that it was less than a week old and froze solid attempting to do the erase and re-install in front of the gent at the Genius Bar. They would have exchanged it in store but it is a CTO unit.
I will report back on the experience with the new one when it arrives.
