Where can I get Appleworks?

Recently I read how many people use Appleworks in preference to iWorks... I have an original copy of Appleworks 6.0 (for Mac OS8). As I read on this site (and have tried) I cannot install this on my Mac [Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 quad running 10.6.3 - 64 bit], but need 6.2.x.

I would love to start using Appleworks, but where can I download version 6.2.x? I have managed to download the 6.2.9 updater!

P.S. Has anyone installed Appleworks on 64 bit Snow Leopard?

Mac Pro 8core + B&W G3 + Graphite G4 + Quicksilver + MirrorDoor + Mac Mini, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

You cannot legally download AppleWorks, just the updater.

If you have access to an older Mac that can run Tiger or earlier & has Classic, you can install AppleWorks 6.0 on it, copy the whole AppleWorks 6 folder to your newer Mac & then run the updater. So that you don't have to do this whole process again, burn a copy of the updated AppleWorks 6 folder to a CD.

You could try eBay and do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name). Hardcore Mac sells AppleWorks 6.2.4.

I have AppleWorks 6.2.9 that I use in Snow Leopard on my 64-bit iMac.

Robert,

Your question has nothing to do with the original question of this topic & would be best posted as a new topic.

Did the margins get set to zero?

Yes, that is the result I get. I don't use AppleWorks for word processing or spreadsheets any more, I use iWork. Rarely do I even open AppleWorks as even my database needs, for the most part, are met in Numbers. I'm surprised that more of AppleWorks isn't broken in Leopard & Snow Leopard.

There comes a time when users have to make a choice - don't update the OS or find other software to do the job. Depending on what you need to do, that decision regarding AppleWorks may come sooner rather than later.

Considering that AppleWorks was declared EOL some time ago, this is not really a good time to " start using AppleWorks."

Unless you have existing AppleWorks Paint or Database documents that are essential, I would recommend using a different set of applications—iWork, NeoOffice, OpenOffice.org or MS Office are some choices. There are others.

Hi Peggy, Thanks for that information. Make yourself comfortable...

Couldn't get OS 9.0 to install on my G4s - even the Graphite (they all wanted 9.2 which I don't have!), so had to dust off my B&W G3; restore OS8.6 from it's original disks; install Appleworks 6; then resurrect the G3's old buddy, an unbelievably slow, antique USB(ver.1) Imation Super Disk (which I'd tested to see if it connects to Snow Leopard; it did!) Then use that to transfer the Appleworks folder to my Mac Pro ready for the 6.2.9 Updater... Phwww!

Then after all that... The updater, which found the Appleworks6 folder, won't update it because it will only update a US install!!!!!!!!

So... Reconnect the G3; delete the UK Appleworks6 folder; install the US version (which is some 7 MB smaller!) and copy it via the Super Disk... And try again!

Nope. Exactly the same error message! 😟

Then I tried copying the 6.2.9 updater to the G3 with OS 8.6... It worked fine here, updating the 'classic' version to 6.2.8 !

For one final attempt before I start to cry, I then copied this updated 'classic' version to the Mac Pro and tried the updater again... FAILED! Still the same. Says it can't find the US version! So at this point, I think I'll give up!

Since AppleWorks was designated "end-of-life" it is difficult to find the updaters (especially the US/North American) on Apple's site. Here's the page with the links for the 6.2.9 updater. The page has two download buttons that link to the North American updater & links to other languages further down. So, you can download the North American updater by clicking the "download" button & the UK/International English updater by clicking the first item in the list on the page.

Three things to do:

• In the Finder, go to Applications > AppleWorks 6 and open the AppleWorks 6 folder.
(If the folder is not in the Applications folder, move it to the Applications Folder and run the updater again. That's where the updater will look for it.)

• In the AppleWorks 6 folder, Control-click on the AppleWorks 6 icon and choose Show Package contents.
In the AppleWorks 6 window that opens, open the Contents folder.
In the Contents folder, you should find 3 folders: MacOS, MacOSClassic and Resources (and 3 plist files). Open the MacOS folder.
In the MacOS folder, click on the AppleWorks 6 icon and press command-I (Get Info).
Check the version number in the Info window. If it is 6.2.9, the update was successful.
(You should also find AppleWorks 6 v6.2.8 in the MacOSClassic folder.)

• If the version numbers are not up to date, return to the AppleWorks 6.2.9 update downloads page, download the International English updater, and run that.

Hi Peggy & Barry, Thanks for all this help. Unfortunately still no joy! I tried both the US & UK updaters; with both the US & UK Appleworks folders on my Mac Pro. I even tried both updaters direct to the OS 8.6 drive mounted in an external firewire enclosure - just in case there was some file elsewhere that it needed to see! Nothing!

As for your suggestions Barry... I am familiar with 'show package contents', but this did not work! When I 'cmd+i' or right-click to get info, show package contents is not there. The Appleworks 6 program has a greyed out 'NO ENTRY' sign across it! When I cmd+i all that's available is:
Open
Move to Trash
Get Info
Compress "Appleworks 6"
Burn "Appleworks 6" to Disc...
Duplicate
Make Alias
Quick Look "Appleworks 6"
Copy "Appleworks 6"
Show View Options.

Get Info does show it as version 6.2.8 (which I suspected as I updated the version on the OS 8.6 G3!

I'm going to try one last thing before giving up completely! I'm restoring the G3 again; updating the OS to 9; putting on the original Appleworks 6.0 (US), again; then moving the HDD to the F/W enclosure attached to my Mac Pro; and running the updater one last time!

BTW... Just because Apple thought to 'EOL' Appleworks, doesn't mean it was the right decision! Lest we forget Apples '**** up' by removing FireWire from their laptops recently! And due to the public pressure from tens of thousands of us - including me - e-mailing Steve Jobs and pointing out that an Apple without the firewire they invented, was like his beautiful Porsche without tyres! Low and behold, we have it back again!

... STOP PRESS!!!!!!!!!!!

THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE - HENCE THE CAPITAL LETTERS!!!!!!!

APPLEWORKS 6.0 - SIX POINT ZERO - WORKS ON MAC PRO RUNNING SNOW LEOPARD 64 BIT!!!!!

If I knew how to attach a screen shot to this post, I could prove it to you!

I'm not sure what changed, but I did EXACTLY what I've described above; opened the Appleworks 6 folder on my firewire/OS9.0 HDD, and the icon for the A/W6 program no longer has the No Entry symbol across it, so I double-clicked (knowing in my heart it would say "Sorry Pal, this ain't happening!") and it opens, and RUNS!!!!!

(Now to copy the folder to my Mac Pro App folder and see if it works... Hold you breath...)
😀 OMG!!! It works! (+Have you ever seen anyone so excited about getting a piece of 'EOL' software to work???+)

But then the BOMB!!

In either the WP, SS or database documents, if I try to 'Check Document Spelling' Appleworks 6 crashes! 😟 But then, I am (somehow) running a 'classic' software in an environment that states it does NOT support 'classic' software!

Nothing to loose by trying the 'updater'...

Well, if nothing else, the updater finally worked! Now to try the Appleworks 6.2.9 software...

And low and behold, after two days of playing silly buggers, I have a working copy of APPLEWORKS!!!!!

Thanks again for all your help; and I hope I haven't bored you with my ramblings! darth xxx

P.S. If I'm feeling really brave, or bored, some time soon, I might try this again but with the UK install !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😉

P.P.S. The bottom line is... I could have bought iWorks several times over with the money I could have earned in all this time I've used! But, apart from the satisfaction in getting something to finally work when it has stubbornly refused to, is priceless (almost). On top of that, I've enjoyed using my old Blue & White G3 and it's old operating system - which I shall put back to 8.6 at some point!

On the subject of which. Do either of you (or anyone) know where I can find a list of ALL the Apple computers - from the B&W G3, through to the G4 Mirror Drive Door - and the exact version of the Apple OS they would have had installed when brand new? As I have a 'museum' of several 'plastic' Macs and would like to put the correct OSs on them.

Try EveryMac. They don't list the supplied OS version, but they do list the "Supported MacOS". The earliest version listed will, in most cases, be the supplied version.

Happy to hear you've got it running!

Try Mactracker. It's a pretty slick app.
