Where can I get Appleworks?

Recently I read how many people use Appleworks in preference to iWorks... I have an original copy of Appleworks 6.0 (for Mac OS8). As I read on this site (and have tried) I cannot install this on my Mac [Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 quad running 10.6.3 - 64 bit], but need 6.2.x.

I would love to start using Appleworks, but where can I download version 6.2.x? I have managed to download the 6.2.9 updater!

P.S. Has anyone installed Appleworks on 64 bit Snow Leopard?

Thank you. I did just that and now I can open all my old Appleworks files EXCEPT for the Database files where I get an error message that it cannot be read. It seems I can create a new database file but cannot access the old ones which are mainly mailing lists. Any ideas? Thanks. FloridaBill

I'm not sure what "that" you just did, so it's hard to make a suggestion. But I always start with deleting the AppleWorks preferences.

Hi Peggy,
Thank you for prompt response. By "that" I meant following your post of May 4 on how to transfer Appleworks 6 from old mac to new mac. I followed your directions to delete the preferences, but database files still do not open. Exact error message I get first is "Open Dictionary - Unable to read the dictionary of the application or extension because it is not scriptable." I click OK and then get new message "The document 'Mailing List' could not be opened. Apple Script Editor cannot open files in the 'Apple Script Editor Document' format." I've seen that before when I try to open files someone has sent me made in different system, but never for file I created myself with Appleworks. Please advise. Thanks. Bill

Thank you, Peggy. Just to be sure files were not corrupted through the years, I went back to original backup installation disks that came with my iBook G4 and moved the entire application AppleWorks (US English) which contained AppleWorks 6.2.9 for Mac OS X) and all the subfiles. I restarted new Mac and same result, can open everything except data base files. Otherwise clueless, but appreciate your input. Bill

Thank you Roger! Adding .cwk didn't make a difference but when I went to "File>Open With" I found Appleworks offered as an option but Apple Script was the default, so I changed the default to open all similar files with AppleWorks. My other Apple Works files like letters and spreadsheets when I went to look at "OpenWith" all had set Apple Works as the default already. Thanks for the help! Bill

Several years ago (when AppleWorks was announced EOL and I got scared because I use it so much), I bought a copy of the educational version of AppleWorks 6.2.9, still sealed in the package, on eBay for $29.99. This is the one that will also install on Windows (although I'm not sure which versions of Windows it will work with).

If someone needs a copy of AppleWorks 6.9, you could keep an eye out on eBay. Maybe a teacher who is retiring would have a similar package up for sale on eBay, although it may take a long wait for it. It probably isn't going to be that reasonable now, either. I still have mine, still in its sealed package. I've never had to use it (knock wood).
