This post was simple enough that I thought it might work, but alas I still cannot get my mac to connect to the wireless. There is a windows laptop that's usually the only computer here, but the MacBook detects the network and it accepts the password and everything. It just gives the cannot connect, self assigned IP error. Says the problem is in the network settings somewhere.
Network diagnostics and assistant have both been unable to solve the issue.
The network is 2Wire 286 and the router is AT&T 2701HG-B.
Can anyone help me out please?

I'm afraid I've nothing constructive to add here - I've had periods of months at a time with trouble free connections - and then the same problem arises again and persists despite every possible attempt at a fix -- "self assigned ip address" shows up on airport and the connection doesn't complete. It's extra irksome when I'm in hotels on business. Been round any number of houses searching for fixes in vain. Do Apple ever actually look on these forums to see what unresolved issues are out here??

I did stumble on a solution that works and perhaps can be used by others as well.

1. Go to network preferences
2. Click on airport and then advanced
3. Delete the network you are trying to join by selecting the network you want to join and hitting the "-" key
4. Click ok
5. Then in the main screen, delete the airport itself, again by clicking the minus key then pressing apply
6. Reboot your machine for good measure
7. Go back into network preferences
8. Add back the airport by clicking the plus and selecting airport (you can call it what you want or simply leave it as airport 2 or remove the 2)
9. Click on the network name - you might have to ask it to show available networks
10. Enter usual password/key info.

Hi, somewhat relieved to see I'm not the only one having this problem. I just took my new 13" mb pro out of the box this evening and tried connecting to the wireless network. I've had two other mb pros and currently have an ipad, iphone, and mac pro...all connect to this network just fine. The new 13" mb pro, though, is giving me the self-assigned IP address message and will not connect regardless of anything I do.

I've tried restarting my wireless network twice. I've tried all of the suggestions in this thread (deleting airport, restarting, etc.), and I've even tried taking the other devices off the network to see if it was a device limitation from the wireless access point. Nada. Pretty frustrating. If I take it to the office tomorrow and cannot connect there it looks like apple support will be getting a phone call.
