Can't remove Smartware on Western Digital My Book Essential external drive

Hi, I just purchased a 2TB Western Digital My Book Essential External Drive. When I plugged it into my Mac, I installed the Smartware software thinking that I would be able to remove it with the Virtual CD Manager.

I did everything that the guide told me to do. I went to Western Digital, updated the firmware, unplugged the external drive, restarted the computer, plugged the drive back into the mac.

I then installed the Virtual CD Manager, unplugged the external drive, plugged it back in, but the Smartware software is still in my menu bar and opens every time I plug in the drive. I can't seem to get rid of it. Please help

I'm unsure what you've found to be "unsuited" for Macs in the world of commodity hard drives. I'm irritated by the crapware manufacturers seem intent on sticking on every USB stick and hard drive in the marketplace these days, but as long as I've been buying FW and USB drives, pretty much any major make has worked fine for me.

Actually, the only one I've had crash out was a LaCie.

OWC make nice kit, but they're also very proud of it. My "on the go" drive is a bus-powered USB2/FW400/FW800 guy, and he's great, but he was expensive, too. For desktop Time Machine backup, WD's as good as anything else.
