Linksys Wireless Game Adapter

I just got an X-Box and a friend gave me a Linksys Wireless Game Adapter for it.
I have an Airport Wireless router.
The Game adapter isn't "finding" the network (the green light isn't on).

I am admitting I know NOTHING about this stuff so I don't know what settings to look for and where on my iMac.

Other wireless devices find and connect to the network (Wii, iTouch, PC Laptop) but I know how to find the network settings to add the password there.

How do I make this all work together? Any help would be great. Thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Yes, it does thanks. One thing to take into consideration is that this adapter is based on 802.11b technology ... which only offer a top bandwidth (speed) of 11 Mbps. The Xbox 360's Ethernet port is considerably faster as would either the optional Microsoft 802.11g or 802.11n wireless adapters. This will, most likely, become an issue if you do a lot of on-line gaming or host games.

Since the issue is most likely with the adapter or its settings, I can give you some basic troubleshooting steps to help you along.

The first thing to work out is if your new Xbox recognizes this adapter. From the Xbox, go to My Xbox > System Settings > Network Settings, and then, select the "Test Xbox LIVE Connection" option. This should run the Xbox network diagnostics and report back if it was successful or not. It should also identify which area is the problem if it was not.

You didn't mention it, but since you posted in the AirPort Extreme Discussions area, is the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) your current Internet router? If so, which radio mode and wireless encryption type do you have it configured for? You can find both of these by using the AirPort Utility on your Mac.

I've performed the test and it's telling me it can't locate the IP address from the router. I'm assuming it's because I have it set up that you need a password to connect to my wireless network.

I have the AEBSn and set to WPA2 encryption.
Typically a wireless device finds it and automatically asks for the password.

With the game adapter, obviously, it can't do that. So I need how to figure out how to give the adapter access to the network.

Two things: 1) This adapter does not support WPA or WPA2 encryption, and 2) It may not be compatible with the Xbox 360 (I'm trying to verify this one.)

To rule out the first, please use the AirPort Utility to temporarily disable wireless encryption on your AEBSn. If the adapter can "see" and access the network, then you will have to choose a much weaker encryption or none at all when gaming. (Not recommended.)

My friend that gave it to me used it with his Xbox (he is now wired and didn't need it) but when it was he had the same encryption but his was a PC with a Linksys router.

I basically need to "access" the game adapter somehow to give it permission. I simply don't know how to "access" it though. I will try turning off encryption but like you said, I don't like that idea.

I appreciate you trying to help, thanks
