Accessing network drive with an iPad

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for an App (iPhone apps okay) that will allow me to copy photos from the iPad to a network drive.

I would like to use my iPad to store photos while travelling, and ideally I would like to have a second backup. I thought I could bring an Airport Express and a portable USB drive to create a remote network drive. I would then like to be able to copy photos from my iPad to that network drive.

I looked at the Apps "EZShare" and "iStorage" which seem like they might do what I need, but it was hard to tell for sure from reading their documentation. I tried "EZShare Files" (the free version), and I was able to copy photos to a storage location on the iPad and access those from my computer, but I wasn't able to copy directly to a network drive (which I did find and was able to browse). Maybe I need the "Pro" upgrade for that?

The iPad seems like a great photographers companion while travelling, but I shoot RAW and even my 64GB iPad will fill up on a longer trip. And even if it doesn't fill up, I feel much safer having as many backups of my photos as possible.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.3), iPhone, iMac, iPod touch, iPad 3G, Apple TV

Hi

I have also been looking at this and thought I would share my solution in case it is of any interest...

- I use the camera connection kit to import my photos from the camera

- I then flick through the "last import" folder to get rid of any rubbish shots

- When I want to backup to remote drive I use "FTP On The Go Pro" to upload latest images.

I have an Iomega home media drive which has an FTP server feature and this seems to work well. The FTP app is not cheap but is very good and makes light work of selecting and copying all the necessary files.

Hope this helps.

Hi. Dave at Avatron here. With any of these iPhone or iPad apps, including Air Sharing HD, that support SFTP/SSH, you can access other volumes on your network pretty easily.

Set it up once like this:

1. From your Mac, "Connect To" the desired file server.
2. Still on the Mac, turn on Remote Login in the Sharing preferences.
3. From Air Sharing HD, go to the servers list, and Add a Server.
4. Choose SSH/SFTP, and add your Mac.

Now you've set it up. Every time you want to connect, do this:

1. In Air Sharing HD, navigate to the Mac server you created.
2. Look in the /Volumes folder for the mounted file server.

Cheers,
Dave

I was wanting to do the same thing and access photos on my network drive from my ipad directly. Try Filebrowser for ipad and Netportal for iphone. There's a free netportallite app so you can test your connection before purchasing the full versions. It was very easy...I entered the name of my network drive (yes, name not IP!), id, and password and could see all the folders and files.

Hi Kcisam,

I am trying to get this Netportallite working on my iphone. I have a hard drive connected to my wireless router with a usb cable, i am using windows 7 and the hard drive it working find with it remotely.

I tried everything with netportal settings with my ip address etc to get it working and no luck. you seemed to get it working fine very quickly.

when you say full name of your network drive, what exactly did you enter?

Mine is Wd drive and it wont find it. even with entering my IP address.

any help would b great

Hi Richard,

I am using Avatron's Air Sharing app to transfer my files between the iPad and the network storage.

I pretty much followed Dave's simple instructions above to setup a Server on the Air Display app. Here's what I did.

In my case, I have Western Digital Network Drive connected to my home WiFi network. This serves some shared folders with dedicated logins.

1) On Air Sharing app select the Plus icon from the top left. This will let you add a Server/Share.

2) From the list, select FPT (assuming you have an FTP server running on your network drive?) or SSH/SFTP if you have ssh access to the network drive. Of course this depends on how you are sharing the content on your network drive.

3) fill in the Description, URL (the ip address of your Network Drive). You can leave the user name and password blank so that the app will prompt you for the login details when you try to connect.

4) save the details and select the newly created Server/Share from the Server list which will prompt you for the login details and connect if all is good

Hope this helps.

Good luck

Hi Richard,

Not too familiar with the Orange Brightbox, but I've taken a quick look in here.

I can only guess this is using SMB for sharing files on the USB drive. I would try Enabling the autoshare and setup a username and password. Then on the Air Sharing app try adding it as a ssh/sftp using the same login details.

Good luck

HI Suranga

Well I finally managed to get it sorted but what a ridiculously complex workflow I have ended up with. Being new to the iPad I was enjoying the faffing around because I was learning so much as I went along and I was determined to achieve my aim by whatever means. But now that I have done what I set out to do I am able to stand back and wonder what the heck is going on. The iPad is most definitely a technological step forward for me, it's so quick and easy to use but achieving my desired aim with my photos is a joke. However, as it's all new to me I'm willing to accept that I may have gone about this all the wrong way so I'd love for somebody to show me a better route if there is one. Here is my current workflow:

Download Photos from SD card (using CCK) into iPad Photos App

Use the same App to delete the rubbish

Import Images into Photogene for editing and publishing

Save to Camera Roll via Photogene

Import in Sortshots for tagging and rating

Save again to Camera Roll

Export to Network Drive using FileBrowser

Delete all unwanted copies of the image in Photos

Done!

All of the time I saved in not booting up the steam powered laptop is now lost. I'd have done all of those steps in one piece of software (plus a file manager). Of course I cannot get away from the fact that I can do all of this out in the field, in fact anywhere on the planet but does anyone out there have a quicker and easier method?

Hi Richard,

I just came across your post while looking for something else and thought I might add my 2 cents. I do quite a bit of photography and have have 3 options that I use. I found two apps that I use on the iPad and computer save me a lot of time.

Option 1:Simply use iCloud's Photostream to transfer the photos automatically to any Mac, PC or iPhone. Works great for simply transferring all photos. You can then just drag and drop your photos to any storage device from there.

Option 2: There is an app called Photosync that you can download onto your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and PC. This app allows you to transfer photos and videos wirelessly to any of the devices that has the app installed. You can transfer any of the photos, specific photo albums or events you created on the iPad.... I use this app a lot to transfer photos and videos to and from my iPad or iPhone. It saves the files into a Photosync folder on a mac or PC when transferred and you simply have to drag or backup the photos to any storage device from there.

Option 3: Only for Lightroom - I am a big fan of Adobe Lightroom for many reasons. I have been using Lightroom for a while and earlier this year found a great app that helps me achieve all the proofing, tagging, flagging, keywords,.... that I want to do while on the road with the photos that I take. I can create separate collections, etc. and then transfer all this data into Lightroom from my iPad. The app is called Photosmith and it is the best. There is a plug-in for Lightroom that can be installed to accept connections from the iPad. All keywords, flags, etc. are transferred right into Lightroom when a sync occurs

I hope some of this may help you find a better way.

Cheers

I spent a good amount of time the past few days trying to find a way to get my wife's ipad to view 30gigs of photos on a hard drive connected to an AirPort Extreme. I was very irritated by the fact that the AirPort Extreme wont even accept a ntfs drive. But that's somewhat unrelated.

I used an ios app called "program files". Once you get it set up, it will let you view photos as thumbnails and in full resolution.

I'm probably going to purchase a legit NAS drive, as the AirPort Extreme disk is not as fast as I would like. Ill probably try the app you suggested after I purchase a nas.
