Apple announces future update for Wi-Fi issues...

+From Apple's support site+

Symptoms
A very small number of iPad users have experienced issues with Wi-Fi connectivity. This article outlines workarounds for these issues. *Apple will also address remaining Wi-Fi connectivity issues with a future iPad software update.*

Note: For general information on troubleshooting Wi-Fi connections with iPad, refer to this article.

Resolution
If you consistently encounter issues connecting to a specific Wi-Fi network, try the following steps to resolve your issue:

Update Wi-Fi router firmware

Verify that your Wi-Fi router firmware is up-to-date.
Note: This is important if your Wi-Fi router supports 802.11n, as it may still be using the draft specification of the 802.11n standard.
For AirPort Base Stations, refer to this article for information about firmware updates. For third-party Wi- Fi routers, check the manufacturer's website for details on updating your firmware.
Use WPA or WPA2 wireless security

Check the wireless security option of your Wi-Fi router. If WEP is being used, try using WPA or WPA2.
Some Wi-Fi routers using WEP wireless security may cause intermittent disconnects to iPad which requires re-typing a password. Using WPA or WPA2 wireless security on your network will correct this issue.
Note: WPA and WPA2 encryption protocols are newer, more effective security options for wireless networks than the older WEP protocol.

Adjust screen brightness

Check to see if your screen brightness is set to the lowest level by going to Settings > Brightness & Wallpaper. If brightness is at lowest level, increase it by moving the slider to the right and set auto brightness to off.
Note: Brightness control in the iBooks application can also be used to adjust brightness.

Renew IP address

In some larger wireless networks it may be necessary to renew your IP address. Renew your IP address using the following steps:
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi
Locate the Wi-Fi network you are currently using and tap
Tap Renew Lease
If the issue persists, try turning Wi-Fi to Off and then to On.

If after attempting the troubleshooting tips provided above you are still having difficulty connecting to a network please contact Apple.

Yay! I saw this news on Mac Rumors and was totally pumped! I can't wait until I can use my iPad and not experience any wifi problems.

That being said...

I'm happy that Apple is publicly acknowledging the wifi problems. I've had Apple employees tell me kind of 'off the record' that Apple knows about the wifi problems and are working on a fix for them.

Alas, the moderators have already edited your post. But I should tell you that if you feel someone, even me, is acting like a troll, don't feed them, ignore them.

My only goal is to inject some logic into a discussion where it is sorely lacking.

It is no secret or surprise that Apple updates their products. Apple has also been known to modify their products to work better with other company's buggy products. Apple's e-mail software, for example, has been steadily dumbed down over the past 15 years to be more compatible with PC e-mail programs that are still incompatible with public e-mail standards even older than that.

I have no doubt that Apple will do everything they can to make the iPad more compatible with the widest range of network hardware. It is possible that there is a magic iPad fix that will make it work with everything out there, but very unlikely. It is more likely that there is going to be some kind of cut-off where Apple considers some routers too old, too flaky, or not common enough to support. People who are unfortunate enough to own said routers are still going to have to upgrade.

I just couldn't resist commenting on this post, specifically concerning one of the contributors, etresoft.

etresoft, going back through your posts, it's amazing how unhelpful, negative, and downright bitter you are. It's sad that anyone with your attitude, and net negative contributions, can manage to rack up such a high post count.

The Wi-Fi issue on the iPad has been proven beyond a doubt, but you persist in your attacks. Just because you and others don't have the problem, doesn't mean it's real. Apple's announcement today of a software fix is the final vindication for those you've harrassed.

Go ahead and reply with your drivel. I and many others will continue ignoring you as usual.

I do ignore you for the most part. It's some of the other people on here that let your negative posts get to them and respond accordingly.

It's obvious you have nothing better to do then come here and harass ipad owners who are having problems with their wifi. If that makes you feel good, then by all means keep on going, but just know that no one appreciates it.

FYI. My router is just fine, the iPad I received on the day they were released had the typical connection issues you see on most of the discussion regarding the iPad wif It also had the problem at hotspots. The otter problem it had was the is that the antenna would only find one network, even though my $300 netbook would always find other close signals
After talking with tech support and trying all possible fixes with no success apple replaced my unit. I no longer had connectivity problems at home or at hot spots. However, the problem of not finding close networks is still the same. For example at home there are three close neighbors who my netbook, laptop and iPod touch always find. My iPad only find my home network. My neighbors who all have different providers share our signals when we experience Internet problems. This is not possible with my iPad because it does not find them. When I go to my neighbors home I get his signal but not mine.
There is obviously a problem with the iPads inability to find networks other than one only 25 feet away.
Many sites are talk in about this problem most likely being caused by the antenna. Unlikely the software update will fix that. I love the iPad except for this problem. Talked with apple today to get a case number for this problem. Will wait and see if the software update will fix this but based on what I have read it is unlikely it will

Would be interested in hearing if anyone on this forum is having this issue

There are plenty of us on this forum that are:

1) Technically experienced and competent on multiple devices made by multiple manufacturers.
2) Are neither Apple fanboys nor Apple haters.
3) Are certain beyond a shadow of a doubt that the iPad has as yet unresolved problems with its wifi reception. And NO, it's not just a matter of so many old routers out there. This is flat out refuted by the fact ALL our other devices connect just fine to all those old routers.

Is it software, firmware, or hardware (let's face it, it's manufactured in China, not exactly a paragon of manufacturing quality control)? Nobody knows. Hopefully, Apple will track it down and correct the problem(s).

In the meantime, rest assured that you're not imagining things...and you're not silly, technically inept users, as some on this forum are implying.

By the end of May Apple will finally release the iPad in Germany. But the German Apple support refuses to give support for iPad even the US Apple Support page also links to the internaltional phone numbers. In Germany support just insists that there is no Wi-Fi problem because they haven't got an email about it.

So that announcement seems to me that Apple just wants to calm down their users. I know that it takes time to find a solution and to quality assure it. But the way Apple treats me as a customer who just spent some hundred Dollars doesn't feel very good.

I started with an iPhone 18 months ago, last March I bought an Macbook Pro and now I bought an iPad because I was very satisfied with Apple products - so far. I have about 15 devices (iPhone, printer, PCs, Squeezeboxes, Wii, Macbook...) connected to my Wi-Fi router none of them older than 2 years. The router is German Telekom's flagship router with the newes firmware. All devices connect very well to that router with a fantastic throughput. Except the iPad. And at the airport everybody seems to connect to the hotspots. Except me with my iPad.

BTW: I configured my router to only use 802.11b and 802.11g and NOT 802.11n. It seems like my iPad keeps steady connection with two or three bars and recovers good from sleep mode since about half an hour sigh But I would like to use it also at hotspots...

Very well said. Having experienced all of the wifi issues since I received it on then release date and exchanged one but still having reception issues there is no doubt apple has some problems with many of the ipads that are NOT associated with "routers or user problems". I am amazed at so many people on this forum continue to believe that the problems are because of the routers and not Because of a defective OR poorly designed wifi system. I still love it and just hope Apple will correct the problem for all of us first generation purchasers, whether that be through a software update (not likely for poor reception issues) or by changing out hardware (probably unlikely). But nevertheless I remain optimistic.
