iCal/iPhone sync keeps losing events

Several times recently I have entered a new event in iCal on my iPhone. Then at some point in the future, I go to look for the event, either on my phone or via iCal on my MacBook, and the event has disappeared. A couple of times I found that my calendar sync settings in iTunes had switched themselves off. Today, however, "Sync iCal Calendars" is still checked, with the "All Calendars" radio button enabled.

I have lost two doctor's appointments and a friend's birthday this way.

Using Mac Pro on 10.6.4 and iPhone 3G on OS4.0.1.

I entered an appointment on the Mac Pro for 12.00 tomorrow and synced with the iPhone. The appointment comes up on the iPhone as 04.00. Frantically check the time zones on each device - no problem. I re-open iCal on the iPhone and an appointment I had today vanishes as I'm looking at the screen. I'd input this to the iPhone along with 2 others for next week, all 3 have gone.

Apple is selling the digital life but I can't trust it at the moment - the price of growth? Yeah I'm frustrated after paying the premium for a reliable platform.
Come on, Apple made the PC, the phone and both operating systems.

Finally, why oh why on an Apple discussion forum labeled iCal does iCal continually get flagged as a spelling mistake?

I will add to the chat on this losing appointments thread. I have an iPhone 3GS that I sync to Outlook on a PC. It always worked just fine until I upgraded to the new OS. Suddenly, with one push of a button, I lost three years worth of calendar entries. If I roll it back, I fear I will lose all the entries I have made since the loss. Meanwhile, I am afraid to sync again.
As others have said, if this keeps up, I will have to go back to Verizon.

synced for first time with new iPhone 4 with MacBook Pro. The calendars names are on both the laptop and the phone but they are both totally empty. I rely on the sync to back up the iPhone. Does this mean I can't do that anymore without losing all the iCal contents? All the contacts seemed to sync without a problem. Would love help on this.

Does anyone know if using an Exchange server will solve the calendar sync problem?
I'm willing to buy an 'Exchange' contract. As this is really important to me!!

I have had this problem ever sins I bought my iPhone 3GS with all firmware versions.

Not sure if I LOST any contacts But I sure have a lot of DOUBLE contact sinds the upgrade to iOS4.

Not the first time Apple has problems with Sync.
(remember loosing all your songs in iTunes???)

Most recent tech details:
- Microsoft Outlook 2007 SP2
- iTunes 9.2.1.5
- iPhone OS: iOS 4.0

Be careful what you wish for. My husband is on an Exchange Server with iPhone 3g. IT department advises all iPhone users not to upgrade to 4.0 because the mailboxes overload and they cannot access them. Unless he offloads a ton of emails, he is stuck with the current software and the now old iPhone is fading. Sigh. I have lost numerous Outlook appointment information but found if I made the correct administrative changes on my desktop iTunes for my iPhone, I do not lose appointments. This requires you to sync ALL calendars. I inadvertently created a second calendar and cannot get rid of it. That is another issue - how to undo what you have done. Husband will not use his iPhone to sync calendars and relies on analog aka hard copy for his use.

I've had this problem for a year or so (3GS) on whatever the latest iOS was (ie including pre-4.0). For me it seems always to be events added on the phone that sometimes don't "make it" past the first (or maybe second) sync.

My own suspicion is that it is something to do with having iCal either running, or even with an open window on the Mac while you're syncing. Incoming events from the phone do not just "pop up" into the iCal window as you sync: sometimes you have to close the window; sometimes you even have to sync a second time. That seems reasonable: it's a sort of "refresh".

But I think this "wait till next time" or "wait till the window is closed" sometimes gets screwed somehow, and the "to be added when the Mac iCal ready" event is lost, ie never added to the Mac's iCal. And then, the fact that it's -not- there somehow syncs bacl to the phone, subsequently, deleting it there as well.

Thus I do two things: (1) try to remember to close iCal's window when syncing; and (2) any really important event I add on the phone gets screen-shotted on the phone while still in the add dialogue. That way if I have a feeling I've lost something, I can go back and check the photo gallery to be sure, and retrieve its details if so. The photo gets deleted once the event is seen safely arrived on the Mac.
