mac book pro, Mac OS X (10.6.3)
That is really annoying. I would never have downloaded that app if I knew that. I wanted something so I could read a book on all apple platforms. Only have an iphone and would like to read downloaded books on a bigger screen. I guess that is the last time I download using that app.
i agree. We should able to read on any device. Plus we should able to transfer the what highlighted.
I too have just downloaded the Steve Jobs bio from iTunes and I can't read it on my recently purchased Mac Book Pro. To say that I am flabbergasted is to put it mildly; can it be true that the greatest pioneer of technological design hasn't managed to design a laptop costing £1500 on which I can read a book that he wrote and Apple have sold to me.

This officially makes iBooks useless, especially for students. Wow. Apple, you guys dropped the ball on this one. Mac stuff is usually better designed than this. This is just about the stupidest oversight I've seen in anything of late . . .especially given that the DRM used in the iBook epubs will keep anything else from opening them. Did you guys have a team of chimpanzees build your ibooks strategy, or did someone in the brain trust just think that graduate students would be writing papers exclusively on their mobile devices? Tell your iBook group that it's time for them to get their heads into the game. In the meantime it looks like it has to be kindle or nothing.

I think there are several ereader apps which can be used on both iOS and OS X in addition to the Kindle.app, such as Nook, Kobo, and Googlebooks. My impression is that the selection of books available from these other sources is greater than that from the iBookstore in any case.
I found a way. Go to adobe.com and download digital editions, after that install digital editions and then hit command o then browse to
/Users/YourUsername/Music/Itunes/ItunesLibrary/Books and then open the book you want to read.

Please provide the name of a book you paid for from the iBookstore which you have read in that way. It will only work with free books and those from the very few publishers who do not use DRM. Most people want to read best sellers and other DRM'd books on their Mac, and I don't think you have provided a way for them to do that.
Intriguingly, when one navigates to the Apple support site listed, there is no icon or reference to "iBooks" only to iPad or MAc apps. Coincidence? I think not! (tongue in cheek). I registered my displeasure under the iPad "sign"
In my opinion this is unacceptable from Apple. I have a iMac, Macbook and iPad but since Apple turned treating consumers this way I stopped Apple as my favourite hardware supplier. My phone is android now, and I'll continue to buy services and hardware from companies that do not try to control my life and how I read my mwspaper or my books.
I won't buy books on iTunes anymore.
this is really how i've been feeling as well.
kindle is the best! no strain on your eyes even after hours of reading it and with calibre converting almost anything to mobi you can read forever

It's too bad this is still happening to people after 18 months. Clearly Apple's own small notice on purchase pages that iOS is required is too obscure for many buyers to see. Apple should really put something in the iBookstore that no one could miss regarding the inability to read purchased iBooks in OS X.
Well, actually, Apple should just open up the ecosystem to include the Lion platform. That would still motivate an upgrade to Lion or a new machine, but at least make it possible to read purchased books on the Mac. There's no reason they can't make this work...And it's one thing for a Mac not to b REQUIRED to operate an iOS device, but nothing says that need to be mutually exclusive. I don't think, for instance, that it would cannibalize iPad sales. Why? Kindle is doing great despite the Kindle app for Mac and iOS. Plus, the reading experience is the best on the iPad. So getting a taste on the Mac would probably create demand for the iPad. I hope Apple is reading this.
