No - this required the iBooks app. The iBooks app is for the iPad and the same will be available for the iPhone when firmware update 4.0 for the iPhone is released this summer.

An app written for OS X on a Mac can't be installed and used on the iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, and an app written for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad can't be installed and used on a Mac.

You'll know if Apple wants to allow iBook reading on a mac soon. If they do, you will see that ability in the new Mac os release (Mountain Lion) this month. If not, buy an iPad or just get used to reading books on your phone period.

I too have downloaded Kindle on my ipad and my macbook pro and it works great. books are synced and 1 other big thing.......IBooks are usually much cheaper on Amazon than through Ibooks and Apple. I wont be using IBooks till apple sorts it out. Hey Apple is anyone paying attention to these blogs? MUCH CHEAPER...and easier to switch between macbook and IPAD

iBooks is quite pretty, but it just isn't executed very well. I'm not sure Apple really gets books. If they applied similar reasoning to books as they do to music (or even, partly, movies), things would be much different. I won't be using iBooks until I can use those books in more places... and the longer I use Amazon, the less likely any kind of switch-over will happen.

I with all of those who find that they are less likly to switch to iBooks the longer they use a Kindle app. In fact, I now so appreciate using the Kindle app on multiple Apple devices, including the MacBook Pro, that I am considering purchasing an actual Kindle device. Once I go there, the possibility that I will purchase an iPad drops to zero. Apple, please get your act together and produce an iBooks app for your own devices before you lose us forever.

Hi folks if you own an I Phone and a Mac and dont want the to use I Books in fairness there is a lot of free

stuff on I Tunes. Download the book on your phone, and hen sync with your Mac, and drag the book to a Folder on your Mac. You will need a special program to open the book. The best one is adobe digital editions, and away you go.

Thats what i done especially if you dont want to upgrade to Mavericks.

There seems to be only one slightly cryptic mention in this thread of what is changing in the Mavericks release of OS X. Apple has finally done what we hoped would be done long ago. You will be able to read iBooks on your Mac!

Using Preview to read pdf files on the Mac has been a better experience for some time and with the release of Mavericks the same will be true of iBooks and probably epub books in general. It seems that Apple may have been listening though moving at a very deliberate pace. As Stewy would say: "Victory is mine!".

p.s. I will continue to get books from Amazon but their reader for the Mac is some cross platform abomination that I'm sure will pale in comparison to Apple's iBook reader for the Mac.
