backup Spotlight index file - where is it?

My apologies, if I overlooked a topic addressing this issue.
I'd like to backup the Spotlight index file because I need to do a clean install of a system. Spotlight has indexed the external drive which is very large. I've found that Spotlight re-indexes this drive every time OS X is reinstalled. I've had some computer problems that have required multiple re-installs. Where is this index file located and can I back it up and copy it back so that I'm not looking at several hours of re-indexing a drive?

Here's a way to see hidden files.
Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
To see the files, copy this line into the terminal window. Press enter, if needed.
# Show hidden files & folders in finder
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE ;killall Finder

# Normal display. Hide hidden files & folders in finder
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE ;killall Finder
