This statement is incorrect - the GoalZero Nomad7 solar panel charger does (unfortunately) NOT charge iPads. It charges iPods and cell phones (although very slowly), but does NOT charge an iPad. The status indicator on my (1st gen) iPad shows the battery indicator with "Not charging" next to it when it is hooked up to the USB port of the GoalZero solar panel, exposed to full sunshine. I agree 100% with the idea of using sunlight to power mobile devices, and support the philosophy and philanthropic efforts made by GoalZero, but unfortunately this product does not work for my iPad - it'll go back to Costco tonight. By the way, the GoalZero documentation claims nowhere to charge iPads; it only mentions iPods, iPhones, cell phones etc., so the company does not make any false claims here.
Here is the best deal on a portable pocket sized solar charger for the iPad and iPhone. This panel produces 2 amps of power which is the same as the AC wall charger that comes with the iPad, so in good sunlight the panel will charge your iPad as quickly as the wall charger will.
This panel was made specifically for iPad's to charge them quickly and to fold down to a pocket sized format.
The panel uses 18% efficient solar cells that have a very long lifespan, 20-30 years. The price is right also compared to other options on the market.

By far the best choice of products out there is http://www.goalzero.com/ a very wide variety of backup batteries w/ solar chargers for all your USB and AC devices including Ipod/Ipad video cameras/laptops you name it. I use mine alot and been a life saver on long trips and camping trips
I have just found out that GoalZero makes another solar panel charger that seems to be able to charge an iPad - although it comes in at a hefty $450 (Sherpa 50 adventure kit). I have not tested this unit, though...
Your best bet is the SunLeaf Pro. It's one of the highest powered chargers for around $150 (I paid $160 with coupon "promoaa") It's an 18 Watt model that folds up to be the size of a wallet, very nice for traveling. I brought it to Cloud Peak in Wyoming and I was able to use my iPad everyday for a whole week while I was in the mountains.

Buyer beware: google is not necessarily your friend. The envirogadget article was erroneous on all counts. None of the products featured will generate enough amps to charge your iPad. Please check the product states specifically it will do that. You will be looking at the more expensive end of the product ranges. You should be able to find the charging specs and confirm that you will be able to supply sufficient amps to allow charging to commence.
The Goal Zero products are excellent but for the iPad I would check out the Voltaic Spark. It's a solar charger and tablet case with 8 watts of solar panels and a rechargeable battery pack with a dedicated high power output for tablets as well as a regular power for smaller devices like phones and ipods.
This site has the best pricing I've found.

Hi. I regularly go fly fishing and trekking, so a power source is really needed. The only device I've come across (and use) is the 14W Flexcell panel. I've used this the last few times I was away and I've never been let-down. In winter, I had to use two linked together to charge the iPad quickly, but fir the rest if the year, one was enough:

I'm seeing if the following setup works and would save hundreds of pounds I admit that charging the batteries may take a little longer than the other chargers. But if it save me 100's of pounds and also allows me to keep charging loads of battles for future use. Who cares.
Basically charger the 4or 2xaa batteries using the solar charger and USB battery charger. Then use these batteries with the extender providing up to 10,000mah that should completely charge the iPad to full.

I've designed a DIY solar charger kit that works with iPhones and iPads (as well as just about any other USB-powered device). It comes with a 5W solar panel with support for up to 10W, a 22Wh battery, and outputs up to 1.5A through two USB ports (so you can charge your iPhone/iPad while also powering a reading light, for instance). The basic kit starts at $120, which is cheaper than the other commercial offerings. It's also Open Source, and as a DIY kit, you can repair/upgrade it yourself (unlike the closed alternatives).
