iTunes syncing: unknown error (-50)

Whenever I plug in my iPod Shuffle to sync my music a pop up comes up saying 'iTunes could not copy {song name} to the iPod {iPod name} because an unknown error occured (-50).' It happened after it asked me something to do with iTunes Store purchases that were on my iPod but not on my PC? Thanks in advance

I know this is a problem with iTunes 10. I'm trying to do the same, and I have to use Convert Higher Bitrates, because my music collection is too large.

I synchronized all of my music several months ago when the "Convert Higher Bitrates" option first appeared for iPod Classics in iTunes 9, and it all worked fine. This is Apple's problem, and they need to fix it.

tombcpa... My brother have the same error... -50 issues. Tried all the solutions and elsewhere as well..

Managed to prove to the Apple tech in a Singapore shop after 3 trips and finally they honor the warranty. Problem was solved after that.

Hope that is hope for answers for others who faced this issue.I worried for those who either do not have it under warranty and wondered should they get a new ipod or not... At least with my experience, a new ipod helped solve -50 error issues.

I have an iPhone 4, an iPod Touch 2Gen, and a an iPod Classic 160Gb. The Touch and Phone sync without a problem. When this problem started coming up on my Classic, I figured the hard drive in it was dying after 2+ years, so I replaced it.

This problem is occurring with my brand-new Classic too. I tried copying my music using an external drive on two different Macs running the current version of iTunes, with similar results, over and over again. This renders the iPod Classic unusable. I NEVER have a problem copying music to my Phone or Touch. A check of the hard drive using Disk Copy reveals no problems. Apple needs to figure out what the limitation is and either announce it or fix it. This is happening to too many people.

Thought I'd thow in my experience with this since Apple will not acknowledge it.

Using XP ( I know, it's old), had iTunes for about 8 yrs. I have a shuffle (3rd gen) and just bought a Nano (6th gen).

Could not get it to sync, constant 'unkown error (-50). The shuffle started doing the same when trying to sync.

I spent 5 days and nights looking for a solution including the 'genius bar' at Apple. Was ready to give up and return the Nano. I followed every advice I could find here on trying to get it to work. What was the connection between both devices getting same error constantly?? THE LATEST VERSION OF ITUNES.

Yes, every solution starts the same: Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed, WRONG!

The only instuctions that I followed was the 'how to uninstall iTunes'.

I then did a search on prev versions of iTunes and downloaded ver 10.1.1.

ALL WAS RESOLVED. No more errors, both devices synced with ease. Everything works perfectly.

Not once did I see a suggestion of going back to a prev version to solve the problem.

The latest version may be perfect and I am not slamming it, but for me, my os, my problems with this (-50) error.

The only thing that worked was going back.
