Anybody drop their iPad yet...?

...and if so, how did it hold up?

Thanks. 😀

I dropped mine getting out of a vehicle and it dented the corner of the case by the volume controls and lock switch, neither of which work now. You said "A case is on the way." Where/how did you order a case? I'd love to get my case replaced but have no idea how and it doesn't sound like Apple will offer any help. Also, what is the cost, and how will you change it yourself or go to a repair facility? Thanks...

You can get a new screen, etc online through ebay for about $75 but you had better be really competent to replace it. It is not that easy. You need a special tool just to open the ipad.

You can send it away and have it fixed. $199 or $299 depending on how bad it is. I only paid $500 for the ipad 2 so I put a protector on the screen and living with all the damage.

It was suggested I check with the credit card company. Indeed Visa does cover it. I was excited until I found out they only will cover what Apple covers. In other words, apple has a one year guarantee so visa will give you two years. Sound great? Apple doesn't cover breakage so neither does visa.

It was also suggested I check with my Home Owners insurance policy. Indeed they will cover it with a $1000 deductible.

Starting to get the picture? Does SOL sound familiar.

I've had my iPad2 since the release and I have best buy insurance on it. I also have a disabled 4 yr old daughter who I often have to carry along with the iPad. I thought it made sense to put the iPad down somewhere at my earliest convenience and the put my daughter down in a chair or couch. Never a problem, until one day my silly wife is holding my babies and decides to put her down first while pinching my iPad between her armpit. Crack! 4 foot drop on concrete tile floor. It hit the corner and cracked the border (white part) in the very corner, but screen and function remained intact. I'm considering if I should cash in on the insurance or wait for catastrophic damage...

An update from my original post. I surrendered my ipad 2 to my daughter. She still uses it and loves it to death, even with the smashed glass and all.

I, on the other hand, reinvested in the 'new' ipad and took advantage of Apple care which for the first time, includes breaking it on cement! YAHOO! Not that I plan on doing it but at least I feel a little safer handling the unit.

I guess enough people have dropped them that they decided to offer insurance against it. I paid $100 for the coverage and still have to pay $49 when it happens and it can only happen twice in two years... You get the picture. This time I went whole hog with 64gig and 4G so it is worth the protection.

While I was on vacation housekeeping came into my timeshare and dropped it. Screen smashed and they paid for it. Got a brand new replacement and apple won't let me upgrade to the plan that has breakage coverage. Since the device was originally purchased in December (WITH AppleCare, btw) I am stuck with no way to insure the replacement against breakage, as the replacement 'inherits' the old plan.

Seriously? The iPad was a gift while I was hospitalized (my kids didn't know when/IF) I would come home. I wish they'd saved the money. It is so annoying that I can't insure it, and I spent three hours today on the phone with AppleCare (most of that time on hold - it was lovely when I was 'accidentally' disconnected after the first 50 minutes) just trying to solve an issue with email (not resolved, btw).

So, get a screen protector and throw out the apple smart case, it offers zero protection. I got a 'bumper' like covering, but it makes the iPad heavier.

Anybody drop their iPad yet...?
