Best way to convert video for iPad

I just purchased an iPad and have some DVD's that I'd like to convert to video for the iPad. These aren't copyprotected DVD's. In the past I've used Roxio's Toast and Popcorn to convert video for my ipod/iphone and AppleTV. Neither of these programs have a selected for iPad though.
I hope a future update to these programs have this feature. Until then though is there another program to convert this video? I hope to find a user friendly program. Both of the above work but also with some DVD's it can be confusing to find the proper files to convert. Thank you for your help.

Converting for an iPod should work on the iPad. You can often use Quicktime to do the conversions although iTunes can also convert when you import/rip the contents from the DVD using iTunes. There are lots of utilities, too, that can convert various video formats such as Handbrake. Find them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

Handbrake is not a solution for a lot of folks for various reasons as it has limitations. Spending time on that forum, for the DVD folks, the guru fellow over there has a fairly straightforward solution.

"Limited"? Albeit Jon Walker has already answered this, I do too: Handbrake is based on the best and fastest H.264 encoder, X264. You can directly access the latter from inside Handbrake if you do need something. However, in 99,99% of cases, HB's built-in options will work just fine.

You could elaborate more on why and in which respects you find HB limited. It's THE best and most recommended video converter tool, far better than most commercial tools and even, in most cases, faster than Apple's own Compressor costing $50.

Here's a new article with a lot of benchmarks and additional links on how it compares to other encoders: http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/benchmark-excellent-multimedia-converter-handb rake-vs-commercial-apps

I have Handbrake and Aiseesoft products but recently bought Wondershares Ultimate for Mac and all I can say is in my experience I haven't used an easier or quicker ripper / converter.

I'd stay away from Aiseesoft products (at least their Video Converter for Mac): it's slow (benchmark data: http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/benchmark-excellent-multimedia-converter-handb rake-vs-commercial-apps ) and overpriced. HandBrake is a much better solution.

Thank you for your answer !

I use handbrake, but i don't know how to configure it to avoid loss of quality ?

When i add a video file, first i can choose from Loarge file size, web optimized and ipod 5G support.

Then in the quality section, which constant quality do i have to choose for a 720p, 1080p or even a dvdrip quality file ?

If i choose the bitrate quality, same question ?

thanks !
