Adjusting height of display on 27" iMac

I recently ordered a new 27" iMac. However, I am concerned that it may not fit under a shelf on the desk where it is meant to go. (The iMac was ordered recently so it hasn't arrived yet.) The space appears to be about 20.5" in height and according to Apple's specs the 27" iMac is 20.4" so it ought get into the space with a tight fit (although I'm not sure I measured the height of the space accurately enough). Anyway, I was wondering if it is possible to adjust the height of the display? The online documentation only mentions adjusting the tilt of the display. (I've tried tilting the display on some other iMac's in my office and tilting them backwards actually appears to slightly raise the display. I think it could be uncomfortable to read a display that is tilted forwards),

Hi William,

just measured my 27" iMac and its 20,512 inch in height (52.1 centimetres) so it would be a very tight fit with your shelf.

And the iMac is not adjustable in height, only able to tilt the display.

Besides that, you really should consider moving the shelf.
The iMac tends to get quite warm (some say hot) at the top and has on its backside an air vent near the top where the heat from inside of it dissipates.

So giving the iMac some 'room' at the top is a must to avoid any heat-related problems.

The iMac just arrived and it turns out that it isn't exactly a tight fit but it is a "snug" fit. There's just enough room to tilt the display fortunately. I suppose cooling may still be an issue though as there is not much room for air to circulate. The shelf is at a workplace (in a sort of open plan office) and moving the shelf may not be feasible. I suppose bringing a fan might be possible,

Actually I would be really interested in some method for lowering the display if one exists, even if it means changing the stand (which looks like it could be removed although I haven't investigated this) - not just because of the overheating problem; but also to lower the display a bit in order to avoid neck pain. (I have raised my chair which helps a bit although it is a bit like being in a high chair.)

The software for monitoring the temperature could be really useful though; as I may be doing some number crunching (image processing) on the computer,

The Apple manual (for the 27" iMac) just states general ergonomic advice on page 68-70. It doesn't provide any information on how to follow this advice in terms of additional adjustments possible for the display. My problem is that none of the suggestions are possible without changing or modifying gear/ furniture.

However, if it is possible to remove the stand following the advice on the other site then it ought to be possible to replace it with a lower stand. This may require getting a spare stand for modification from Apple or modifying the existing one. (It may be possible to get a workshop to do the modifications),
