Not typing the first character

I've noticed since updating to 10.4.3 a short delay when I start typing. Most prominently it occurs when using in Safari 2.0.2 and Entourage (two applications I use most often).

Basically what happens is I go to start typing in the URL field (Safari) for example and it doesn’t recognizes the first character typed. I then have to go back and type the first character missed. The same will occur when I go to type an email. Once I start typing it is fine, it’s only when I first start typing that first character is missed. I’m not that fast of a typer to be missing or not hitting the first key hard enough.

It almost appears to be a delay like the PB/OS is sleeping and takes a quick second for it to wake up and recognize the command or in this case the first key typed. I have run a Repair Permissions and reset the PRAM with no success. I’m open to suggestions to what this may be caused by and how to remedy it.

You are right, I had noticed this and put it down to my bad typing. It happens infrequently, and since the two apps I use most are the same as yours, I don't know if it occurs in other places. I have no idea why it happens, my machine is squeaky clean (saying that is just asking for trouble), everything repaired and humming along, so maybe there's someone out there who can enlighten us...

Well I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem.

I did want to clarify that this happens when there has been a break in typing. I could be surfing the web for 15 minutes or more, clicking and dragging around with no delays or problems. But when I go to type a Google search or start typing in another application that very first key typed is not recognized. But if I go back a minute later and type something else it is fine and picks up that first character. But if I don't type anything for say another 10 minutes it will do the same thing. So the delay appears to be very specific to keyboard input. I've also noticed it when I first press the page up or page down key not recognizing the keystroke. It's not until I hit the key again does it take it.

I see others who have responded to this issue are using different types of computers then mine. So that makes me think this is a OS bug. It would be nice to see an Apple moderator who reads these forums to actually participate and assist in remedying the situation.

Thanks!

I too have had typing issues, most notably while using Mail (although it just happened typing this in Safari) my "t" almost never works, and it is far worse the faster I type.

I first thought it was a bad keyboard, as I had just purchased a new G5, but then started getting suspicious of software issues as I noticed the problem being much more pronounced in some applications. I too am running 10.4.3

Has anyone had any luck solving this issue yet?

So here we are, months later and the issues persists if not getting worse. I was hoping it would of been fixed with an Apple OS update but nothing. The issue seems to be getting worse if anything.

Now the computer has a hard time recognizing the "1" key, the "L" key and the "Delete" key. When I press the 1 key it will either not display the keystroke and I have to repeatedly hit the key and then it displays numerous 1's at one time. The L key usually involves 2 or 3 L's being displayed for every L keystroke made. I then go to delete all the 1's or L's and the delete key doesn't work. You have to hit it many times or hold it until it recognizes the command.

I took the PB down to a local Apple repair shop and of course it worked fine. The only thing we could think of that was different was my Logitech wireless mouse wasn't connected. So I came home, un-hooked it and the issue persisted. Also, I have a gig of RAM and basically the only apps I have running are Entourage, Safari, iCal and maybe Word Or Excel. No other utilities or apps running that should be sucking up the RAM.

After being a very competent Mac user and former Apple employee I know what I'm doing and how to troubleshoot issues. Aside from doing a clean install I have tried everything. I'm a little frustrated at Apple's lack of concern regarding this issue as it has been addressed in this posting as well as many others for months now. I paid $2,700 for my 17" PB and would expect it to run like a dream without any problems. I am very displeased and hopefully Apple will finally acknowledge the problem and FIX IT!

I've had the same issue with my home iMac (Indigo running 10.3.5) since 10.0.x - but it's always the first key I hit waking from sleep while typing in my password. It doesn't do it every time, but after it does, there's never another problem. It's a nuisance, but it's been consistently inconsistent through each upgrade, so I'm getting used to it. Funny, though, neither my Titanium PB or any of our G5s at work ever do this.
I suppose if it's going to omit a character only once, it might as well get it out of the way early.

To join the ranks of the frustrated, I too have had problems with the first character being recognized. I primarily use and notice the issue in iTunes and Firefox, especially after a break from use. I know it's not just faulty typing. I haven't had any experience with it being a single key in particular, so it doesn't seem to be key specific for me. But I have noticed it getting a little worse over the past few weeks.

I don't expect this post to solve any big problems, just bring Apple's attention to the issue. Apple always makes it a point to tell about their "award-winning service," but I think they need to pay closer attention to those who are forking up the thousands of dollars in merchandise. Come on Apple, don't succumb to the corporate bastardliness that has enthralled so many companies!

Follow-up...

I'm happy to say after months of frustration the issue has finally been resolved.

After getting no assistance from Apple by either phone or Internet, I took my PB to a local reseller (not an Apple Store) where they ordered and replaced my keyboard. Fortunately the PB is still under warranty so it didn't cost me a dime. What it did cost me was the inconvenience and loss of productivity due to all the problems. For that I’m disappointed with Apple who failed to respond to any of the postings or feedback on this well document issue.

As for those who still have the problem and new folks seeking help we now have a solution, albeit an expensive one if your computer is out of warranty. I will tell you this though, my PB hasn't missed a keystroke or delay since the new keyboard. So for all the months myself and others have been posting our complaints, concerns and pleas for help we now have an answer, no Thanks to Apple I might add.

Finally, I would like to say this about Apple’s technical support policy...who I know monitors these postings. You give customers who call for assistance within the first 90-days of ownership “Complimentary Support.” Which is basically there to hold your hand on how to use your new Apple product within the first 90-days. When I sought phone support after my problem first arose I was told they wouldn’t help me because it’s been over 90-days since I bought my computer and I now had to pay for phone support. The thing is I wasn’t seeking phone support, I wanted the hardware issue with my computer fixed under warranty. But I was never given the opportunity to seek that assistance since I wouldn’t pay for their phone support. What I needed was my computer (still under warranty) fixed by the manufacturer. In years past, if your PB or iBook was under warranty and there was a problem, you’d spend 20 minutes troubleshooting it with an Apple technician over the phone and if that didn’t fix the problem they would DHL you a box with your computer coming back fixed a few days later. That was all I was ever seeking.

I hope my PB doesn’t give me any more problems now. I don’t want to have to go through all of this again.
