How to get and install OS 9 og OS X 10.3 (under Classic)

How do I get and install OS 9 under 10.3?

I just installed the system again, and made sure that the file system was compatible with OS 9. But when I open Classic, a OS 9 system folder cannot be found, it says.

I want to install OS 9 so that I can play Diablo I (the game).

It's a iBook G3. I don't have the original software that followed the mac (10.2), but I have 10.3... I made sure that the OS 9 drivers were installed on the hard drive...

But still a "OS 9 system folder cannot be found"...

OS 9 is not included on an OS X retail installer. You have 3 alternatives.

1. Use the install CDs (assuming the disc has OS 9) for you model iBook.
2. Use a retail OS 9 install CD (white with orange 9) Then update to OS 9.2.x.
3. Copy the System Folder from another Mac that has OS 9.1 (or better with 9.2.1 or 9.2.2) installed. A USB thumb dive works great for this. Transfer the folder to your Mac. It won't interfere with your OS X system which is in a folder titled System.

MacMagnus:

I am not sure how you went about installing OS 9. Did you install Panther first, and then an Archive and Install of OS 9? If you have nothing else on the computer I suggest you start over and use the method I will post below. If you have anything on the computer be sure to back it up first.

Format and Install OS 9
This process will completely erase everything on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure to Backup your User Folder and all third party apps you can't afford to lose

• Boot from your OS 9 install CD holding down C key.
• Go to Drive Setup and reformat your drive as Mac OS Extended (HFS+)
Reinstall OS 9
• Update to 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates
Update your firmware if your iBook G3 is the original clamshell.

Install Panther OS X 10.3.9
Boot from the 10.3.x install CD 1
• Go to Installer Menu and launch Disk Utility
• (Optional)Go to File menu and Repair OS 9 Permissions!
• Quit Disk Utility.
• Launch Installer
• Select Destination disk for installation
• Click Options
• Select Installation Option Archive and Install
• (Optional) Preserve Users and Network Settings
• Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
• Check box to install BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
Install Mac OS X 10.3.x
• Restart and Repair permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!
• Download and apply the 10.3.9 Combo Update
• Restart and Repair Disk Permissions as previously!
• Run Software Update and apply all updates available
• Repair Disk Permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!

Please don't hesitate to post back with questions or comments.
