Keynote for the iPad - video drama!!!

I have followed very carefully the instructions for getting video into Keynote but cannot get video files to show in the media tab in Keynote.

I have converted them to the proper format using iTunes (Create iPad or Apple TV version) but although it shows up in video app - nada in keynote.

has anyone successfully got video into Keynote for the iPad?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

Sounds like you did it exactly right to me. Possibly it wasn't converted properly or completely.

While this won't work for Keynote, try dropping the video into iTunes and see if it will copy over to the iPad when you sync it. If not, that confirms that it wasn't converted properly. You can use iTunes for the proper conversion - although you still need to drop it into iPhoto to get it into Keynote.

hey guys,

make sure your video is exported to 720p quality.

A real easy fix for any video is to open it in quicktime, and if it's the new version of quicktime, SAVE AS and select APPLE TV for your quality, or 720p.

If it's the older version of Quicktime, EXPORT to quicktime movie and select Apple TV as your preference. Anything exported with this format will work on the iPad. I do it every week in my presentations.

I spent about 5 hours working on this and discovered the following:

1. If you prepare your videos in apple tv format, (or iPad format as you can do with the beta version of Elgato's turbo.264 HD product as MP4 files), they will show up in the media tab in Keynote if you sync the iPhoto event that contains the videos (just be sure to tick the box "include videos" or else the videos in that event will not sync).

2. However, I DO NOT RECOMMEND this method of getting videos on your iPad because in my case, Keynote re-encoded all my videos using a lower bitrate and or frame size which degraded their quality. I need to project my presentations on large screens using a projector, so the degraded video quality was a non-starter for me.

3. The best way to do this (for me at least) requires iWork for Mac (which contains Keynote for Mac). What I did was take my keynote presentation file which had been tweaked for fonts, transitions, etc. on the iPad and transferred it back to my Mac (using iTunes, of course). Once the keynote file was on my mac, I opened this with the full mac version of keynotes on my computer. I then inserted my full quality videos directly into keynote, and saved the file. I then added my new keynote files (with embedded videos) back into the file transfer area of iTunes, synced my iPad, and re-imported the keynote files back into the iPad. This time, the full keynote file transferred with my high-quality videos intact; no re-encoding took place. I now have equally high quality video output from my iPad as I had on my late-model Macbook Pro.

Hope this helps someone.

Hey David

Keynote on iPad definitely does re-encode video - it happened to me exactly as the OP describes. I add my high-res movie to iPhoto, sync with the iPad, go to Media, locate the movie clip, and add it to the iPad keynote slide. The first thing that happens is a dialog box that says 'Re-encoding' with a progress bar. Once this is done, I get a working, playable movie in my slide, but at a much lower resolution that's really too blocky to be usable.

Anyway, just so you know.

Yes...it does. Sorry... Actually it is the photo app that recompresses the video when sending to keynote.

If you have keynote on the desktop you can place your videos in a keynote doc and send that over to the iPad. Open the keynote with the video, copy and paste into the keynote that you are making on the iPad.

Or

Copy and paste from the photo app to the keynote presentation. Don't use the import function in keynote to bring in videos....

Okay, so this is the best (and simplest) way that I have come up with:

1) export keynote to images>jpeg (this preserves all the text and misc files)

2) re-import them into a new keynote

3) sync that keynote to the iPad via iTunes

4) open file on the iPad

5) create new slide and add video from the media tab

1) use QuickTime to Save As>Apple TV

2) import into iPhoto

3) create new event (ex. "videos") and add imported file

4) sync that event to iPad via iTunes

The only drawback is that you lose animations within presentation since everything is a flat image. Like most things, you can find another workaround, allbeit more complicated.

Hope this helps someone.

I got it working.

"Convert a video for viewing on iPod, iPhone, or iPad." I used Handbrake. On Mac under the Picture folder, create special folder for this video file and save on this location upon running Handbrake to convert to iPad version.

Connect your iPad to your Macbook, then run iTunes. Click on your device and select Photos. Under the "Sync Photos from", select "Pictures" and ensure you check the "Include videos". Now under the Folders, check the folder name that you had download the converted video file. Now apply and Sync it.

Once you've synced videos to your iPad, follow these steps to add a video to a Keynote slide:

  1. Tap the Media window icon at the top-right of the display in Keynote for iPad:
  2. User uploaded fileUser uploaded file
  3. When the Photo Albums page opens, tap Media.
  4. Tap the photo album that contains your video.
  5. Tap the video thumbnail you want.
  6. Tap Use. The video and its audio track will play automatically when the slide is played by tapping the play icon:
  7. User uploaded file

Hope this help and it make your day. Enjoy the Video Slide on your iPad.

I spent sooo long trying to work this out, and essentially came up with two ways of doing it.

Method 1

  1. Create your Keynote presentation using Keynote for Mac and simply drag and drop your video (literally grab it from a finder window and drop it onto the slide in Keynote) intot he slide. You may have to resize it to fit the slide. Note: Your video must be in m4v format. The easiest way to convert it is to open the video file itself in Quicktime, select export from the file menu and choose iPad,iPhone 4 and Apple TV.
  2. Save your Keynote as per normal
  3. Open iTunes, select your iPad and select Apps from the top menu. Scroll down and you will see an area whereby you can add Keynote Presentations from a folde ron your computer. Add the correct Keynote.
  4. Open the Keynote App on your iPad and add the Keynote to the App.

Method 2

Follow the instructions set out by the user above
