iPhone 3G Glass/Digitizer/LCD Replacement

Hey all,

My fiance's iPhone screen has been cracked for sometime and I was considering replacing it. I saw tutorials all over the web on how to do it and it's not in warranty so voiding the warranty isn't an issue.

EBay has several kits for fairly cheap I just don't know which to get. Is there a way to tell if I need the glass, glass and digitizer, or glass digitizer and LCD? Her screen still displays and the touch still works it just has a spiderweb crack from when she dropped it. Thanks!

Replacing this stuff & getting everything to work correctly is not as easy as you may think. Unless you have prior experience in dealing with micro electronics & the proper tools, my suggestion would be to google third party repair services in your area. There's a shop close to where I live that replaces cracked screens, while you wait, for $50, & they guarantee their work.

Your call...we get posts all the time here from folks doing this for the first time, asking why this or that doesn't work when they're finished. Of course, there's no way to help them without actually seeing the phone. There are a number of fragile connections inside an iphone that can easily be destroyed if you don't know what you're doing.

The disassembly ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3xn7whpZAA&feature=player_embedded) and reassembly ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5LSqMoD4WE&feature=player_embedded#!) videos on youtube appear to make it pretty straight forward. Is this just because the person making the video has done it many many times or do you think those directions are pretty good?

I appreciate the warning by the way. Good to see people on here care about others not messing up their crap without knowing the dangers.

People fix their phones all the time with no problem. But, most of these people have experience dealing with micro electronics, build there own computers, etc. So, taking apart an iphone & putting it back together is pretty straight forward to them, i.e.-they no the pitfalls & what to look out for. You can find instructions on the net to take apart just about anything, but that doesn't mean if you have no experience or training it will be easy. There's alot of stuff crammed into that case & many of the connections are small & delicate. If you're mechanically inclined & have an understanding of electronics, go for it. But, ask yourself a question...how much are you really saving vs a shop that does this everyday & can complete the job in 10~15 minutes for about $50.

If you are attempting to replace the glass yourself, here are a couple of links. Read it first and decide if you want to give it a try. I haven't tried this step but I have found many useful answers relating to my iphone on ehow.com If you are not sure if it is the glass, glass and digitizer, or glass digitizer and LCD, then search around this site. There probably is something there to help you a bit more. Most decent trustworthy instructions seem to point to a repair shop of some kind.

I replaced my digitizer yesterday and it took me over 4 hours! It's very finickety work but pleasing when it gets to the end and it all works! Plus it only cost like 15USD for the tools and parts. I'm not technically minded but the youtube tutorials are very straight forward so if you go through them thoroughly and GENTLY DOES IT, you shouldn't have a problem. No prior experience is needed. Just patience! If it's only got a crack and it still works, you only need to replace the digitizer not the LED. But ask yourself is 4 hours of intricate work worth more or less than 100 dollars? Nowadays you can post away your phone as well and they'll fix it next day. I've seen them online for 70 dollars.

My 17 year old grandson recently replaced his digitizer but not the glass. It went relatively smoothly. Looks like replacing the glass is similar process with the addition of prying off the glass and gluing on the new glass. Only problem is the little cable. You have to make sure it's seated properly. He had to redo it a couple of times. It's best to try the phone before you close up the case in case you need to redo it. But it'c cheap, most of the replacements come with all the tools and you only have a downtime of a few hours.
