Trouble getting sound to play in canvas or in timeline

I'm new to final cut express (have used only imovie before) and am having trouble watching a full preview with sound of my edited movie prior to rendering and exporting. I've read through this forum and saw several references to the need to have View>Video Out>Canvas Playback checked to get sound on my computer when not connected to an external video device. This is checked, but I only get sound on individual clips in the Viewer window, not on the full sequence in the canvas window or timeline. What am I missing?

I am using Final Cut Express HD 3.0, on a Powerbook G4 800 MHz with OS X 10.4.3. If I select View>Video Out>Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Main I only get sound when the Viewer window is active, not when the Canvas window is active.

Thanks for any advice any of you can offer.

Sorry about that - I mistyped this. The linked audio from the camcorder was in A1 and A2. The music I added was in A3 and A4. I can't get the original audio in A1 and A2 to play, unless I double click a clip and put it into the viewer window. But, when I unlinked the sound from the video clip and dragged it to A5 and A6, it worked perfectly when playing from the timeline. And I was able to export the project to Quicktime with the sound working perfectly after doing this. I was trying to get a project done to bring to a family gathering last night, and just made it!

I followed your instructions and found this feature. It is called Clip Enable on my system, and it was checked for the linked video/audio clips captured from the camcorder. If I unchecked it, the clip does not play. It did not have any effect when checked, however, on my problem with getting sound to play in the linked audio tracks in the canvas window.

I'm going to play around with some new clips in a new project and see if it continues to happen. But I did get the project done! Thanks for the advice.
