Mini Displayport to HDMI resulting in cropped picture

Morning all,

I just purchased a Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter to go with my new 15" MBP and have discovered an issue with it. Picture worked immediately upon hooking everything up, but I've noticed that it is cropping the edges of the screen off (maybe 5 to 10 percent of total picture on all four sides). Normally this wouldn't bother me too much, except that I both game and watch a lot of subtitled movies online, and that cropping is very much being noticed on my 42" HD LCD television.

Being fairly new to the MBP (and OSX) might someone know of a buried display setting that needs adjusting, or such?

I had a similar problem with the cropping. I found the solution to be simple. Put the MBP into Clamshell mode.

Have it connected to the HDTV and running. Then shut the lid. Few seconds and the TV display should come back to life with the picture filling the entire screen. If it does not come to life you might need t plug in a mouse to "wake" the system from sleep mode (I use Airmouse from my iPhone).

Also I do not have the underscan slider as shown by someone earlier. Im running 10.6.4 (I think this is the latest version, Software Update not detecting anything new).

Digital Kurtz is that screenshot of the slider taken from a MBP or a MacMini?

When I originally hooked my new Macbook Pro up to my Samsung LED, the image was copped (could not see Menu at top). I then found the Underscan slider, adjusted it down and everything was fine. A week later I did an OS X update and all of a sudden the picture was cropped again, but this time the Underscan function was grayed out. Apple Support indicated they had never heard of this and advised me to return it to Best Buy since I was within the 14 day return period. Best Buy exchanged it with no problems (good for them. I brought the new one home, hooked it up just as before and everything was fine. I was paranoid , however, about doing an OS X update. Now 5 weeks later I decided I was being too paranoid so I finally did the update. Much to my horror the same problem occurred- can't see Menu at top and Underscan is Grayed out. I called Apple Support and their first statement was the Mac was not compatible with Samsung TVs. I told them there were two problems with that argument- 1)both Macs were fully compatible until I did the update, and 2) I also have a Panasonic 1080p HDTV and the same problem existed- Underscan function grayed out. I advised the tech it seemed pretty obvious to me that the problem was caused by the update. She finally agreed and passed me to a senior tech who took all of the information (types of cables; TV model numbers, manufacturer of Mini DVI to HDMI Adapter that I bought from Amazon, etc). He agreed that it sounded like a software update problem that needs to be researched. He promised to get back to me within the week.

Has anyone else encountered this, i.e., the Underscan slider worked until an update? FYI- the good news is I found that I could solve the problem by adjusting the TV itself from 16:9 to Screen Fit (hope this works for others). Nevertheless, as I told the Apple Tech (and he agreed) I don't like the idea that a function that is supposed to work is suddenly disabled for no good reason.

Hello. See my posting under billhutch. I believe the problem is related to the update to 10.6.4. I bought a Macbook, hooked it up to my Samsung LED, moved the bar on the Underscan slider over a little and I was good to go. A week later I did an OS X update and could no longer see the menu at the top and part of the Dock at the bottom. I went to adjust the Underscan slider and it was now Grayed out. Apple Support said they had never heard of this and assumed there was a software or hardware malfunction. I exchanged it at Best Buy and out of sheer paranoia did not do any OS X updates until today ( about a month after getting the replacement). I did the update and now have the same problem- can't see Menu and Underscan is Grayed out. I am in no way a computer whiz, but it is obvious something in the update caused the problem. A senior tech at Apple Support agreed with me and is supposed to be looking into this. He agreed that there was no reason why the Underscan function should be disabled. Fortunately for me, this time I went into my TV settings to see if there might be something there that I could change. I found a Screen Size setting and changed the aspect from 16:9 to "Fit to Screen". This solved the problem for me, but only because my Samsung had this setting. I tried the same thing on my Panasonic plasma but it does not have the "Fit to Screen" setting. It has the following aspect settings- 16:9, Full, Just, 4:3 and Zoom. None of these worked. I guess what the "Fit to Screen" setting does is take whatever native resolution signal the Mac is putting out and fits it to the Samsung screen.
