If you want to type the cents symbol (¢) just go into settings- then general- then keyboard- then short cuts- then add a shortcut- paste the (¢) into the phrase spot and make your shortcut whatever you want. I suggest using something like c/ just because it looks like the (¢) symbol
Hopefully, in the 6 years since the person to whom you're replying posted, they've resolved the issue.

The easiest way to do this is to copy the ₵ sign from her and text it to your iPhone or iPad. Then, copy it from the text message you receive and paste it where it is required. Works perfectly!
And, in fact, that was what the post that was marked as the correct answer to this thread 6 years ago said.

I'm curious: Is there something about how these forums works that makes it so you could not see that the same answer was given on Nov. 28 and Oct. 25 and Aug 27 and April 8?
I have a strong suspicion that there are people who read the original question and then hit reply without ever reading the other pages. In this case, your "solved" answer is old and no longer valid. If someone was foolish enough to read no further than that (and ignore the dates), it might just appear to make sense.
Just another thing I don't really like about the way the first page now works.

Indeed, since that discussion ended 3 years ago, iOS has gotten a lot more capable in this area.

Are you using some keyboard other than English? If so, which one? Are you not using iOS 6? What characters do you get holding down the $ key?

set the 'Region Format' from Canada to 'United States'.
Interesting! Setting Region to Canada on my device does not delete the cent symbol.
That is interesting..! I can only get the cent symbol if I set the International region to United States. Doesn't matter which keyboard.
I'm using an iPad 4 with the new ios7.
answer below of user vulcan_on_earth: long press on $ sign – is a better option...
