How to activate a 3g iPad without a computer?

My wife and I bought her mother an iPad 3G but we do not want to sync it to our computer since we live in different states (and it won't sync anyway but that is another thread 🙂. How do I activate it without hooking it to a computer and not being at an Apple store?

I agree. The iPad should be set up so that, say you are on an anniversary date, and you surprise your significant with an i-device they should have the pleasure of opening it and getting to use it right away.

You do NOT need to sync it with your computer in order to activate the iPad. Just simply connect it. At this point, you will have to name the iPad, register it, then your done. Enjoy it!

What if the person does not have a computer. I have an elderly friend that wants to get an ipad, but has never used a computer. They live in another state.

As mentioned above, the Apple Store will do the initial activation if you request it. However, at present, a computer is necessary to update the system software and back up the iPad. Things may change with the release of iOS 5 but it's not entirely clear yet how much. If you visit the friend occasionally with a laptop, you could handle that for them.
