Setting up a SLS in advance of co-location

Hello -

I am about to set up a MacMini Server in advance of it being co located at a hosting house here in London.

I need to deliver the Mini to them ready to plug in and go. They've already provided me with a static IP and router addresses

I've already set up one Mini server in my home office, so am not too daunted - but do have a small concern which I am wondering if someone could help me with :

- I would like to connect it to my office network whilst I am setting it up so I can install all the updates / transfer files to it easily. However this would mean attaching it to my DHCP server which would assign it a local IP address.

Is it safe to do this, then just manually change the IP address when I have finished ? Or is it likely to screw up my DNS settings ? I was planning on giving it the correct hostname from the start - and setting up DNS on the server to resolve correctly - both forward and reverse.

Should I configure a two ethernet connections in System Preferences>Network then delete one of them when set up and running ?

Any help or advice much appreciated !

Regards,

Andrew

One option you could try is configuring the Mini with the Ethernet port connected to a standalone switch or hub, and the Airport card connecting to your Airport Base Station. In both cases you would configure a static IP, the ethernet would get the address given by the colo provider, and the WiFi would get a static number that matches the rest of your office network, but is outside your DHCP range.

Once you get your server up and running, you ship it off to the colo provider, and disable the Airport connection once it is installed.

If what I just wrote sounds like gibberish to you, hire a consultant.

Thanks carana

I did it slightly differently. Connected to my office network over Ethernet so that the server would update to the latest os release and made a second Ethernet connection with my static IP address from my colo provider.

With a monitor now attached to the server, I Made the office Ethernet connection inactive and activated the second Ethernet.

Booted it up this morning at the data centre and it worked liked a dream..

Thanks

Andrew
