Why won't the data cable charge my iPad when connected to pc

For some reason when I connect my iPad to my pc with the supplied data cable it won't charge the iPad. It syncs ok but just won't charge it.
Is there a reason for this or do I need to get a different cable?
When I connect my iPhone to the pc with data cable from iPad, it charges my iPhone.
I just really need to know why it therefore won't charge my iPad.
The only way I can charge iPad up at the moment is by connecting it to the mains plug with data cable supplied

If your computer has a high-power USB port, it will charge. When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when the iPad is in sleep mode.

Someone posted the link earlier. ASUS AI Charger. Google it. Obviously meant for something ASUS but does allow you to charge your iPad from a PC. It is great.

On the whole other string... Wouldn't you rather people walk away thinking how great and helpful you are, rather than scornful, rude, and arrogant? It's like helping some one up with one hand, then back handing them with the other. The internet and the Apple Support website is flooded with issues. So while you can read 50,000 posts by other people, none of which describe your situation...by then your Apple hardware is obsolete, you've been fired from work, lost 50 lbs, your spouse has left you, your dog died, and we all survived 2012(except the dog).

Let people ask a question specific to them, with their details, with people specifically helping them. The internet is very good for retrieving A LOT of information very fast, not all of it pertains to everyone's situation and some people want to get right to the answer without sifting though years of posts. Or perhaps the answer is different in 2012 than 2010.

If you find it a nuissance....maybe because you've posted 17,000 answers 12,000 of which were the same, and you're tired of seeing the question, and it's made you cranky and you're tired of people you perceive as not knowing as much as you, you should go outside and do something else.

Get out from behind your computer and find some compassion, and kindness. Be a human again.

Take care all

In some ways I agree, but also the tone of the question has a lot to with the answer you might get, either arrogant, or not.

Many questions are framed in such way as to blame the forums for their problems, when in fact many of these people just don't want to read, learn, and expect others to give them all the answers. They should read the user manuals before asking ANYTHING on these forums.

thanks for asking the question because I have the same one, so now I have the answers. And Craig Brady you're a total tosser. Not cool to be so rude and arrogant when replying. If you are feeling a little ANGRY when you reply, best you don't reply at all. You might be an expert but some people are novices and need a little help and guidance.

Don't worry guys, all this attitude from someone that only has the iPhone4, so why don't you upgrade to the latest greatest if you're so tech savvy ???

thanks to 4nth0ny for the info on the asus software to enable iPad charging through your pc. I was a little sceptical at first because I don't like clicking things and installing them willy-nilly but after seeing some others had success, I thought I would give it a go and if need be uninstall it later โ€“ and Iโ€™ve got a pretty good antivirus, so thought why not try it !

Well, it worked and now my iPad is charging whilst in use and connected to my laptop.

Thanks again, these threads are very valuable and itโ€™s great that people keep replying even though the question may have been asked 1000 times before, however this is the first one that comes up when I do a search and goes straight to the answer I need so thanks to Flippers for asking the question

you're a dick Craig Brady. I'm glad I did a search for the same question because this was the first reply that came up and gave me all the information I needed. Unfortunately, you're just totally arrogant. If you don't want to answer because the question has been asked 1000 times before, don't ! It would be better if you didn't rather than be so rude. Maybe you shouldn't just sit on the forums to answer everybody's questions because you are guaranteed to see multiple questions of the same topic.

Hi Groush,

I have just bought a Belkin Pro Hi-speed USB 2.0, 1.8 metre extension cable. I plug this into the back of the charger and and then plug the short ipad cable into that and the iPad. It seems to work. Although I have only tried it once, it charges while the iPad is operating. The long cables I have used only charge while the iPad is asleep. The cables simply provide too much electrical resistance for the Apple charger to get enough power through to the iPad to both charge and operate the pad at the same time. I don't know if it will work with a longer USB extension.

i have an asus laptop with 1 usb 3.0 port and 2 usb.2.0 ports, wondered why it would charge some times and not other times, it only charges when i have it pluged into the usb 3.0. now i haven't looked any farther for facts about this issue other than this thread cause i deduced from the info from this thread that a usb 2.0 port just doesnt have the dylithuum crystals to get the job done. also i don't know if this makes a difference but the usb 3.0 port i have is designed for flashing the bios... (might have increased power access for reprograming eproms etc..)

i hope this info was healpfull ๐Ÿ™‚

We'll I don't care who answers this, & would be grateful for a reply off Craig as well !

Please bear in mind I am a total novice.

I have the same problem with charging & I will try putting this iPad "to sleep" when I plug into my PC via the USB

But how will I know if it's charging or not as the icon does not show when in sleep mode........ Is it just a case of leaving it for a while & see what's happened ?

Why won't the data cable charge my iPad when connected to pc
