Stolen Ipad

Today may 29th 2010 My Ipad was stolen from my car,its less than 10 days old.I was at the mall where they have an apple store>I confidently walked back into the mall heading to the apple store knowing for a fact that apple will help me and the police(i filed a police report) to locate the stolen Ipad since it has a built in GPS and i have the serial number. They furiously refused and very coldly and carelessly said that they do not do that and they dont even have any database for stolen apple products and they will not track my ipad what so ever.I sware to god they did not even say sorry for my loss. Here iam walking to the apple store with all confident and hope only to face the harsh fact that really they didn't care.Eventhough they can help and they can track and they have the capability to but they wont. Worse thing is it isn't my ipad and i have to pay for new one now that i cant afford.Thank you Apple.

Nonsense!

Apple does have the ability to help.

Sprint and Verizon both help people locate stolen cell phones, if they have GPS installed. Other cell companies could do a lot more to help.

But, I don't understand Apple's cold and rude attitude!?

I take my iPad EVERYWHERE. It's not much use locked up in the trunk, where police will tell you to put things.

The next iPad model should include a security slot so I can attach it to a chain!

No, they don't. The wifi model does not have GPS so do you expect Apple to send personnel out to look for the iPad. Isn't it the responsibility of police or mall security to take care of theft problems?

If I go to Tiffany's and buy a ring and leave it in the car and someone steals it, is it Tiffany's responsibility to help me find it since I was dumb enough to leave an expensive item in the car?

I don't know where you live but where I live, police are constantly reminding people not to leave expensive items anywhere in the car.

Apple cannot track your device...they do however offer a service allowing you to do so for a cost of $99/year. It is called MobileMe...

I would like to suggest that concerned and interested iPad users contact Absolute Software and politely request that they develop an alternative: "LoJack for iPad"

(apologies to original poster for off-topic digression, this is of no help in your particular situation)

Apple is just like any other corporation now, they don't give a crap. To be honest as their support quality and product quality are steadily dropping (my 2-year old MacBook is slowly falling apart for god's sake) I am considering more and more about just switching to PCs (which I have never used as a fulltime desktop). I am being dead-serious as well, it seems the more success they have the more like Microsoft they become! I also am not rich, lmao and can't afford my Apple products breaking at the ridiculous rate they do! ON THIS MAC ALONE: My screen has broken ($600), my keyboard stopped working ($300, didn't spill anything, just stopped) and several keys just randomly popped off ($50), it's ridiculous as well, in April I ordered an iPad with $400 on giftcards and $150 on a credit card, all was billed to the credit card and it took almost two weeks to resolve and around $30 in overfees on my cellphone. God, Apple get your crap together! AND TONIGHT my iSight stopped working! I am sure when, if I bring it in my Apple Care as usual won't cover it, because "I caused it."

Sorry that you're having a bad experience but I have not found the same. My MB is 4 years old now and the only issue it has had was the logic board and Apple customer service stepped up to the plate, did a recall and they replaced my logic board while I waited.

Do enjoy all the headaches PCs bring and complete lack of any customer support.

What you say makes sense. However, by reading this thread and other things Apple does not want to be involved and does not get involved.

Remember recently when a lost/stolen prototype iPhone 4, the "finder" contacted Apple but they never returned their call.

My iPad was stolen yesterday too.

The thing I keep thinking is that when the thief unloads it the purchaser will likely sync it. When they do so, will the serial number not be sent to Apple?

Shouldn't I be able to tell Apple what the serial number is and have them inform me when it turns up? Then couldn't I tell the police to go get it?

Yes, but I'd like to hear form a lawyer on this one. Is Apple being an accessory after the fact? Knowing that something was stolen, knowing who has it, and who lost it. Is there a good Samaritan law in California?

If Apple did help out, would it not increase the value of Apple products if thieves know that stealing them increases the risk of them getting caught.

If I were you I would just mark this question as resolved seeing that there is nothing ANYONE can do.
A lot of the people on this thread have tried to help resolve your question but ultimately this loss of your iPad is your fault and your fault alone. The WiFi iPad DOES NOT have a GPS chip making this iPad as good as gone. Although you are right about obligations, no Apple does not track your device because of small print. It does not track it because not enough people loose their iPads to actually count for anything and introducing tracking would be a breach of personal privacy. It is beyond Apple's ability to track your iPad. Besides a IMEI (3G ONLY) there is no constant ID to track a iPad with and the serial number does not remotely have anything to do with the GPS receiver. Simply put the iPad does not have the hardware or software required to be remotely accessed. A Mobile Me subscription allows you to track your iPad only when it is online. ie full battery and a source of power.
WiFi iPads then determine your location from your IP address. I could tell you wanted to hear but that wouldn't have helped much so I told you the truth
