Can't type Hebrew letters in TextEdit

I just need to be able to type Hebrew letters in Final Cut Pro to do some Hebrew text animation. I thought I would first try to type them in TextEdit.

I tried the following method from Tom Gewecke's blog on Troubleshooting Language Problems, and it did not work for Snow Leopard:

'4. OS X - I Switched to the Font for Language X, but Can Only Type English: In a Unicode system like OS X, you switch keyboard layouts rather than fonts. Go to system preferences/international/input menu and check the box for the language you want, plus the box for "show input menu in Finder," then select the language in the "flag" menu at the top right of the Finder, and type. The font will take care of itself.'

The above advice correctly described the language menu for a Mac 10.5.8 laptop, like I'm using now. But on my imac, Snow Leopard has a different menu in System Preferences, called "Languages & Text", with different formats and an extra menu not described by Tom, above.

I tried to implement the above advice as best I could despite the menu differences. I also changed the "language of preference" to Hebrew. All that happened is, the next time I turned on the computer, the features in the "Language" section of System Preferences were all written in Hebrew titles. Nothing happened in TextEdit (even after I restarted the computer), where I need to write in Hebrew and not English, characters.

FYI - before trying all of the above, I installed the optional "extra fonts" and "language translation" features on the Snow Leopard OS X installation disc. I also installed a Hebrew keyboard and even the Ezra Sil fonts as instructed by Tom Gewecke, but I still can't type Hebrew characters in TextEdit.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Go to system preferences/language & text/input sources and check the box for Hebrew Qwerty, plus the box for "Show input menu in finder". Then go to the "flag" menu at the top right of the Finder and select Hebrew Qwerty and type.

The "language of preference" tab does not enable Hebrew input, for that you have to activate a keyboard in the "input sources" tab. (In 10.5 this tab is called "input menu".)

Tom, THANK YOU for responding! Thanks to you, I finally figured it out!

I do want to add a few points, just so that it can be explained better to people in the future:

Yes, I already realize that changing the Language of Preference is not enough.

You see, prior to making my first post I already went to System Preferences/Languages & Text/Input sources and I checked Hebrew QWERTY.

Next, I also checked the box called "Show input menu in menu bar." In System Preferences/Languages & Text/Input Sources, there is no check box for "Show input menu in Finder."

But, I did not know to look for the Flag icon in the FAR UPPER RIGHT of the MAIN MENU BAR for the iMac, which is where one chooses the language to type. (This is the first time I EVER tried typing in another language. So, I had no idea where to look for anything like that.)

I noticed that in Max OS X, it appears as though one does NOT need to open Finder anymore to choose to type in Hebrew characters or Japanese or whatever. The flag icon is in the upper right of the main menu bar after setting the System Preferences/Language & Text/Input Source check boxes, regardless of whether Finder is opened or not.

All I had to do was click on the flag icon, make my choice, and open TextEdit, and the Hebrew characters were there! I did not have to open Finder at all.

THANKS AGAIN for your help!

Hello Tom,

I clicked "Reply" to your post, but because I was not logged in and had to go through that process, for some reason my reply was posted as a reply to my own post!

I don't want to make two posts that are exactly the same, so if you'd like to read my comments in response to your very helpful email, please read the extra response to BlueFriend.

Thanks again -- I was able to figure it out because of your help.
