When in iPad Dock, it says "Not Charging".

When in iPad Dock, it says "Not Charging".

The Apple site states when using an iPad Dock connected to a Mac via the USB cable, the iPad will take a charge.

My iPad takes a charge fine with the 120V charger but when connected to my MacBook, the iPad displays "Not Charging".

Any ideas?

The quickest way to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter. When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when it's in sleep mode. Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

Thanks, MulderSculley for the explanation.

I thought I had seen evidence of the iPad being charged overnight but was still baffled by the "Not Charging" message.

I have to report that since I left the original post, when I lifted the iPad from the dock, it does show an increase from 28% to 36% validating your explanation.

It occurs to me that the software that measures battery state displays
"Not Charging" if the current is below 10W as would be from an older Mac, but the iPad is still taking a (slow) charge at 5V.

Hmmmm... understand the explanation and seems to make sense, however I am connected to a brand new 27" iMac. Do you know if all USB 2.0 ports are created equal on an iMac?

Not all USBs connections will charge the iPad at a fast rate. Even when using the new macs. If your Mac says It not charging then it does not support the fast rate charge. Your Mac will charge the iPad but it will take forever. Use the wall adapter for charging.

I have a Mac Pro (Serial says it was manufactured week 11 of 2007) and it won't charge, haven't tried MacBook as I know it won't work. I just use the wall charger. I wish some third party company would make a dock with 2 ports on the back which took power from one connector and data on the other so I could have 1 dock that charges and syncs.
