How do I insert a line break in Numbers?

Hi, I've had this problem for a while now but just can't find the answer anywhere. I keep seeing that 'shift+return' or 'ctrl+return' will create a new line in a cell in numbers but it just doesn't! I can't seem to find a way of doing it. Please help!

(Also, not numbers related, but if you happen to know how I find out what version of OSX I'm using please let me know.)

Hi Jonny,

Welcome to the Numbers discussion area. The best place to begin looking for answers to your basic questions on how to use Numbers is the Numbers User Guide PDF, downloadable from a link in the Numbers Help Menu.

There are at least two ways to make multiple lines in a cell. One is to use the Option-Return (Alt-Return on some keyboards) instead of a normal Return. Another way is to select your table and then View the Inspector, Table tab. Down at the bottom of the Table Inspector pane is a checkbox that controls what happens by default when you hit the Return key as you are entering text in a cell. That box is checked in the basic template, so hitting Return takes you out of the cell. Un-checking that box will cause Return to give you a new line rather than moving the focus to a different cell.

Hope this helps.

Difficult to guess what is wrong in your system or what you made wrongly.

Here it work.

Maybe a problem of corrupted preferences.

Try to run Numbers from an other User Account.
If it behaves flawlessly it will be time to try to disable the Preferences files:

<startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Numbers. plist
<startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Numbers. LSSharedFileList.plist
